Since we took our RV over and had the satellight software upgraded, we get directv with HDTV. It works great---and we have a roof dome dish.

That is interesting since KVH, Winegard, Kingdome and etc all state that you cannot receive HDTV with a dome antenna. What is the receiver model you are using and what are some of the channel numbers you receiving HDTV on?

The KingDome HD converter worked a few years back when HD programing was on sat 110, but Directv has moved HD programing to sat 101 and now this device is useless...took the converter out when installing the MotoSat SL5.

In re-reading the referenced post, I too was quite intrigued by the statement. What my take is from the statement "we now get directv with HDtv" they have an HDtv and receive Directv programing and is not HD. However maybe they ment to say, we now get DirectvHD with HDtv. But I believe like all others here, Dome antennas won't do that.

Do either one of you have a link to a website that shows a dome...any dome...can be upgraded to receive high definition programming from DirecTV? I don't believe it.

I just had my second MotoSat installed in Oct. on my newly purchased '08, the other was on my '06 a few years back. Each time they came to my location and got to know them quite well. They told me that currently "no dome type antenna will receive HD programing from Directv". These people install Wineguard, MotoSat, KVH, KingDomes all around the country and know what is out there and what is coming. When I asked about the Directv SWM system, said neither Wineguard or MotoSat is working on that at the present. Also was told if you want HD and simple operation go with Directv. Dish does work on Some later Domes, but must switch between Sats. and does not have the offering of HD that Directv does. Also, there is an issue if you have more than one receiver connected to the Dish system. HD will not work in-motion on Dish Net.
The above is why I use both a dome for in-motion and the MotoSat for HD when stationary.
If you want HD on Directv get a carryout or roof mount like Wineguard 3500 Traveler or the MotoSat SL5 that will do the locating for you. You can also get a tripod or ladder mount and use the SlimLine 5 LNB antenna and locate manually (HD is a bit more difficult if you move alot).

Sorry, I have no idea other than calling every KVH dealer around you.
I did the upgrade you are asking about a few years ago when I upgrade my LF to an R5. The upgrade comprises of two new circuit boards, the main circuit board and a new DVB circuit board addition and a new Sat switch. I bought the necessary items from KVH direct as an upgrade package. I think it was around $500 at the time. You will also need to update the software after the hardware updates. I would call KVH technical support and ask about your upgrade options.

Thanks for the information, however I know which upgrade and what parts it comes with but....... that upgrade kit was discontinued about 2 years ago and I gave up on finding any dealer that still had one in stock. I have now replaced the LF with a used R5SL that I purchased in San Antonio for $650.00 and have already installed it. Locked on to the Sat within 10 seconds!! The LF was working but would take me up to 30 minutes to lock into the correct sat since it did not have the DVB technology.

I agree with your thinking... I too receive a great SD signal that displays on my HDtv but it is not HD
