When we are in Canada we are "off the grid". We can use our phone if there is an emergency.

We go there to see and do fun stuff. Internet stuff can wait. Family knows that no news is good news.

I am Canadian and we also have the same roaming problem when crossing the border to the US, so we warned the family and friends that if they need to talk to us they can send us a quick text message or leave a short voice mail and we call them back using Skype.Works great for us. $25 per year unlimited call.
