Verizon or AT&T in the West

I just got off the phone with Verizon customer service
Absolutely pathetic effort on their part
They eventually left us on hold then cut us off
This whole ordeal lasted about 45 minutes only to be cut off
Zero help

End of rant

Is AT&T equally as good in the western states as this is where we primarily travel

Appreciate your feedback

Chuck

I have Verizon & the DW has AT&T for cell phones... If one don't work ...The other one normally will.

For my cellular option I use both. Verizon is more often available, but I've been in areas with only AT&T. Outside of metropolitan areas, there's often no cellular coverage, though.

Is one better than the other in rural areas?

Not really, It is that both servers have "dead" spots with no towers, and sometimes those dead spots over lap.

Verizon is definitely better, but AT&T is not bad. The people who really care carry both. Last summer, we picked up a Verizon hotspot for the summer, to augment out AT&T phones, and we're glad we did.

We have Verizon based iPhones and Jetpack and also use a Mobley on AT&T. We have rarely been out of service completely out West. In our experience Verizon usually has the best overall coverage.

We tried several carriers and eventually settled on Verizon. Maybe not the cheapest, but they definitely have better coverage.

I have AT&T and my wife has Verizon. We have been very few places where one did not work and the other did. If in a dead area, neither one works.

More often than not, we have both. To answer your question with an OPONION, here goes:

A few years ago, I would have said Verizon without hesitation. Today, I think they are both the same.

We are going to switch my wife's phone to AT&T in a few months. Can get discounts just like I do with DirecTV today.

Same experience here. It's difficult to say anything for certain because results will vary based on where you are, but we also carry both Verizon and AT&T and they are so close it's usually hard to choose between them. Verizon might be a bit better in the service area fringes, but there are also places where AT&T is superior so again, just depends. For ultimate coverage having both is best but if you don't feel you need that then I'd just go with wherever you can get the best deal.

I think the coverage maps both carriers provide are optimistic. I would say that in our travels out west, when not in cities, we did not have coverage. I would also be sure you know what your out of country rates are, when we visited Canada, we got hit with $700 in roaming charges in 3 weeks!

Know before you go......

I have a winter home, a summer home, and my RV. Both my homes are in semi-fringe areas on the edge of busy metropolitan suburbs. In both places, ATT is poor to unusable and Verizon is fair to good. So for me, Verizon wins. Your mileage may vary. When traveling in Texas, I did find one place (Buckhorn Lake in Kerrville) where my Verizon phone was useless and neighbors with ATT had signal. So it works both ways, but I think more often it is Verizon who wins.

If you plan on visiting Canada AT&T and Verizon's unlimited plans now include Canadian (and Mexico) roaming. If you don't want an unlimited plan you can also get Canadian coverage on Cricket (owned by AT&T and uses the AT&T network.)

T-Mobile also has Canada/Mexico roaming (and even full international coverage, at throttled speeds), but right now they are not the optimal choice for those looking for the best western rural coverage so not really in the running in this particular thread. But when they get their 600 MHz spectrum built out over the next several years, Verizon and AT&T... watch out.
