Verizon Unlimited = bad

I have traveled a lot this year.
Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado South Dakota Utah California, Lake Tahoe

Only 1or 2 times did I get over 5mb download.
Never 8mb

$65 per month. Really thinking of cancelling.

What am I doing wrong here?

PS I am a tech for last 9 years supporting IT

Turn on your LTE data on your phone or other device? As long as I have LTE, I get much better than 5mbps. As in, several orders of magnitude better. Well, until I burn up the 16 gig "allowance" and they throttle it to 3G speeds.

I am on the same plan and often will see the same speeds you are reporting. However even if I'm only getting 5 Mbps I can still stream HD video, surf the web, etc with no major problems.

I also have the no longer available AT&T Mobley unlimited plan at ~$24 per month so I will switch between the two as necessary.

I have friends that are using T-Mobile and for the most part are pretty happy over-all.

Personally I wouldn't give up the Verizon plan until I was sure another solution might work better as I would not be able to get the Verizon unlimited plan at $65 per month back again.

You might consider Visible , it uses the Verizon network and is un-limited, un-throttled, no matter how much data you use. $ 40 per month including all taxes and fees. It includes un-limited hot spot data usage. They have a $ 100 sign up bonus, paid as a pre-paid credit card. You can save an additonal $ 20 if you enter this referral code vBF6q when you sign up: Visible web site

I have been using this since May and am very satisfied. The only "catch" I have seen so far is that it seems that there a few places in remote rural areas that Verizon does not have their own network and they roam to independent rural cell carriers. Visible does not seem to work in those areas. This seemed to happen to me in remote areas of Maine. So it you go a lot of the beaten path study the Visible coverage map.

One thing I find with Verizon and ATT is that speeds go down if your signal is weak. I have a WeBoost Sleek booster that costs less than $ 200. With the antenna on the roof of the RV and my hot spot / smart phone in the cradle it resolves the weak signal slow down. Sometimes it makes the difference between data barely usable and getting enough data to even stream video.

You did not list what hot spot hardware you have - it could be help to know that & some of the locations you been at - I have the same plan and have seen anything from .2 to 47 mbps depending on location and network traffic.

These are speeds. Had to switch WiFi just to post these. So unworkable performance.

Yes I have weBoost RV installed. Other network system but the problem is performance.

I hear the donít give up, but I am $500 into this with little to show for it.

I have basically the same setup.

I have never really found the weboost to work well with the Hotspot pucks in general. They tend to chose the worst bands with lowest performance. Usually most places i go the Verizon one outperforms the ATT unit. With the exception of my lake house were verizon is 1x service so no data at all.

I found if the weboost is needed then the mofi4500 device was much better as i can select which band to lock onto not necessarily the strongest band.

What i have found is adding external antenna to the hotspot pucks almost always improves performance. I have 2 antenna i plug into the units either the att or the verizon one.

That is my suggestion.

My experience is consistent with your observations.

We also have an unlimited AT&T hotpot from OTR Mobile which supposedly isn't subject to network management and doesn't have a 720p resolution limit.

Having both Verizon and AT&T connections gives us redundancy and pretty much assures that we will always have a connection good enough for streaming video. Together the two connections are costing me ~$125/mo which is less than I was paying DirecTV.

I checked my 8800 & is at the same level of firmware. I do not really have to use the weboost anymore. I got the adapter below and just connect it directly to the 8800 and the weboost OTR antenna when I have 1 or 2 bars.

Only place it really would not work was out west where the cell tower was always congested, but like Docj - I have two other hot spots so can always stay connected.

For me - the plan has been great, several times have streamed 300 to 400 gig without issue.

So, you're getting 50, 500, 5000 or more mbps? Impressive!

Yea, I routinely get around 50 mbps over LTE through Verizon. Maybe I'm just lucky enough to get towers that are rarely used and use them when others aren't. I've burned up that 16 gig allowance in about an hour before. Clearly, your results may vary.
