Verizon Unlimited Plan - Help Needed

We have the original Unlimited Plan from Verizon, prior to it being split into the 3 new plan options.

We just got a Mifi as using the phone as hotspot, was causing serious battery usage, and we were sold on the additional speed from the Mifi vs. HotSpot...It is definitely there.

What we don't know is...The 15GB limit before throttling to 600KB/sec: Is it for the Mifi, or all the devices on the account? We believe the 15GB is for just the Mifi, but can't find the info.

We are sure some techys know the answer to this, and we appreciate your help.

The 15GB limit before throttling to 600KB/sec:

Our Verizon plan is for 15GB total for the devices on the account. Not individually. Also I checked into a recent plan for 15GB for less money but found it was a slower speed below 15GB.

You are correct. It is just the MiFi. The other devices are 22GB each and are only deprioritized on a congested tower, not at 22GB unless the tower is congested. This is for only the first Unlimited Plan.

On the new plans, I think the Beyond Unlimited reduces hotspot to 128K after 15GB.

Go Unlimited gives you 600K hotspot.

You can buy another 5GB for $35 and there is also Pop Data you can buy, unlimited full speed LTE for 30 mins ($2) or 60 mins ($3).

Are you posting about the Unlimited plan that came out in early 2017 or the Grandfathered Unlimited that was around from 2010?

I had the Grandfathered Unlimited but gave it up last year. Should have kept it now as we bought our Coach last July.

The mifi throttles down after 15GB. Can be considerably slower depending on the time of day. You wouldn’t be able to stream at that speed. We use our phone hotspot if we exceed the 15GB on the mifi. Only has happened once because we forgot to shut it off between uses. Phone hotspot does not throttle down on the unlimited plan.

I am referring to the one that came out in early 2017, which I have. I verified this with Verizonwireless when they first published the 15GB limit on the miFi.

I don't know what phone you were using as a hotspot, but not all phones are created equal. We have a MiFi 7730L (the newest one) and two Galaxy S7 phones. The phones are usually substantially faster as hotspots than is the MiFi.

As for the phone using a lot of battery as a hotspot, I can't imagine using either a phone or a MiFi as a hotspot without having it plugged in. A hotspot is a transmitter/receiver; there's no way you can run it for long without having it plugged in.

Howdy!

I recently purchased a FMCA Verizon MiFi Benifit deal unlimited data for $49.99 a month 25gbs before they slow you to 3g. I’ve had an old Verizon 3g unlimited plan and this is not 3g. After 25gbs it’s just about unusable. Of course when I call them they blame it on heavy traffic on the tower.

Our plan allows 15 GB on the MiFi and throttles to 600 kB/s after that. The phones have a a similar 15 GB limit when used as a hotspot. On the phones, the amount of hotspot data used is subtracted from the 22 GB allotted to the phone, which would leave 7 GB of LTE data for the phone. I use Verizon’s mobile app to track data usage and that is how it works on our plan.

how long does it take you to use 25 gb seems like a lot, but now not sure, in terms of hours of Netflix how long do you think this would last

Unless you're very careful, you'll end up spending a lot of your data budget when your computers do things you weren't expecting. Even if you turn off updating, an open browser tab with news that gets updated regularly can suck up an amazing amount of data in a day. I've encountered single day usages of ~4-6GB from leaving my computer on with multiple tabs open.

As for Netflix, if you set your picture quality to the lowest possible you can get nearly 2 hours of video for 1GB of data. Even without that restriction, with a cellular internet connection, I rarely use more than one GB per hour of video.

I don't know of any streaming service other than Netflix that allows you to alter your video resolution to reduce your data usage. There have been posts on these forums that you can set your Roku resolution to 720p to reduce data on any streamed video. I don't think that is correct. I think the Roku setting is for display purposes only and doesn't affect actual data consumption.

With all due respect, it's my understanding that starting with the second generation of Roku, the Netflix channel has been using "adaptive streams" and the channel does not pay any attention to the unsupported bit rate override setting, so, instead of changing the bit rate on the Roku, one has to change the bit rate setting on the Netflix website.

Therefore, with respect to Netflix, at least, the procedure outlined in the above links no longer works with newer Rokus. Furthermore, since it appears that several other streaming services are now using adaptive streams, it's quite likely that this process won't work for them either. Unfortunately, Netflix is the only site that I know of which gives the user the option to select resolution (and, therefore, control data usage).

For those unfamiliar with the term "adaptive streaming" it refers to the ability of the streaming content to dynamically change its resolution (that is, its data rate) in response to changes in the data rate your internet connection is currently supporting. Reducing the quality of the video can compensate for reduced data throughput.

If you watch a lot of streamed video you may have noticed that the video resolution can suddenly change so that things don't seem as sharp as they did. Then, after a few minutes, it can change back to where it was, either all at once or in a series of steps. What it's doing is compensating for changes in the speed of your internet connection so you can avoid the dreaded "Rebuffering" messages that used to be very common. These days even when your internet connection momentarily gets quite slow the video stream can usually continue without pause, although the qualit of the image may seriously degrade for a few moments.
