<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">BillArf </div></BLOCKQUOTE>, et. al,

I'm new to the forum; a recently retired IS professional and interested in "best" Inet connectivity. We connect to the Inet here in the country via satellite as it's the best of the available poor options. Wild Blue has been very good for us.

But from what I've seen so far one of the favorites among RVers is the Verizon card. We're well into laptops here & longtime Verizon cell users too. You mentioned above using the card in a router is very interesting - I'm ASSuming here that you are really meaning to share the card "through" the router via the 802.whatever spec. If so, what are the favorite mfgs & models of those who care to contribute?

Oh, btw, we are going with a 5r as soon as our learning curve begins to flatten out; just started looking. Any & all recommendations along those lines would be appreciated. Going to start with our 2002 Chevy 2500HD gas crew cab, long bed.

Thanks for all thoughts & Best Regards - GC

I've been using a KPC650 Verizon aircard with a Dlink DIR450 modem with excellent results in most parts of the country. I have the Verizon "unlimited" (actually 5GB) plan that costs 60 bucks a month. I got both pieces of equipment off of Ebay and therefore didn't have to sign a 1 or 2 year contract because I had my own equipment. My plan runs month to month.

Had you been a Hughes or Starband customer you would have been able to simply take your satellite internet service with you. Unfortunately, the Wildblue service is spot-beamed and therefore cannot be in a mobile situation.
Only satellite will give you coverage everywhere you travel (including Canada and Mexico) but the next best thing is a combination of a cellular card and local wi-fi coverage. Between the 2 you should be able to get on-line most anywhere in the East and about 75% of the time out West. Of course the farther you like to travel into the boonies the less likely you are to get anything without satellite internet.

GC - Dlink has a router designed to work with the Verizon / Alltel EVDO modems. I have one. It was, shall I say, less than satisfactory.

Alltel is currently selling, through their stores, an equivalent unit. I have no experience with it because they refused to bill it to me (because it was over $200) - so they missed a sale, on policy.

We diversify. I have an AT&T G3 Global Aircard, my DW has the EVDO. Most places we can both get service, occasionally only one - and rarely, neither. Right now I'm hitting the speed meters at about 1.6Mbps.

I have been using Verizon Wireless AirCards with routers for about three years. My first router was a Kyocera KR-1 which worked well. I am currently using a Cradlepoint CTR-350 router with a Verizon USB720 modem. Cradle Point Routers . I am retired, but still support sever IT clients. From ND to AZ to CA to SC and back to ND last winter, only a couple of times we didn't have service.

GC Here,
Thanks to all who took the time to respond to my questions, all are much appreciated. At the moment it looks as if it will likely be the Verizon route for us. As for which router, my experience with Dlink has been fine here in the barn if I overlook it just kind of dying when I tried to flash the code a couple of years ago. Went to a G router at that point, not even sure what mfg. I'd not heard of the Cradlepoint but what I read last night sounds interesting. My wife is in interested in the rolling hotspot idea - we'll do some experimenting when the time comes.

Although if we would have chosen something other than WildBlue for inet here in the hills a few years ago we would be going the sat route instead. At the time I just seemed to ... rightly or wrongly ... find too much negative stuff out in the net on the other providers. Haven't yet, but do plan to look into the current Hughes and Starband offerings just to know what they are now.

Once again, thanks to all & Best Regards,
GC

When I bought my Dir450, it worked, sporadically, for about 2 months before the RF WiFi section went down, hard. It still functions (very intermittently) in ethernet mode.

It was purchased from TIger Direct, with a 3 year replacement warranty. The problem seems to be enforcement of that warranty. D-link says it's not their problem, and Tiger says D-link is supposed to cover it for the first year. I gave up and stuck it in a box. It would be over a year old, now - maybe I can get Tiger to enforce the warranty.

My DIR-450 overheats on warm days. I have to place a frozen gel pack under it to keep it cool enough to use. I will buy something else when it finally stops working all together.

Our KR1 has worked great. There is now a KR2 out. Look at the 3GStore. Great service and people to work with. I think the best you will find. I don't work there just have used them in the past.

GC, I've been using a mobile wireless router for a couple years now. My latest router is the Cradlepoint MBR 1000. I connect with the office server through a vpn on a regular basis and it works great! We run several pc's and an iMac off this setup and honestly can't distinguish from the old cable service I had at the house. We use Verizon too.
