Wal Mart's DVD/VCR recorder combos

A year so ago I intended to purchase a DVD/VCR recorder combo to transfer several home tapes to DVD and at that time Wal Mart was carrying a Magnavox unit for this purpose. Unfortunately due to a hip replacement and the wife's cataract surgery things were put on hold.

Today at Wal Mart I noticed the unit they are now carrying is made by Funia. When I looked up the history of Funia on the Internet it showed that Funia used to manufacture electronic units for several companies including Magnavox, Sony, and several others I don't remember.

Has anyone purchased anything electronic from Wal Mart under the Funia name, and if so is it a decent product or just more junk passed onto us consumers?

We installed one of the Funai DVD/VCR units.in a friend's coach. to my knowledge, she has had no problems with the unit and is pleased with it. As to the company, I think they are headquartered in South Korea, and have a good reputation. all of our three coach TVs are emersons, made by Funai. We have had no problems with any of them for several years now.

You could use a VHS player into a computer with a dvd burner and do the same thing if it's only a couple of tapes. The computer would allow editing of the video before burning. Most commercial tapes can't be copied onto DVD. The combo machines are bigger and less useful than a newer model Blue Ray DVD player. A wireless Blue Ray DVD would allow use with Netflix and other video services that a combo system wouldn't have. One of the Funia models Walmart offers doesn't even have it's own tuner, so it can't record shows by itself.

I have 7-8 home made tapes from TV musical programs from several years ago that I want to transfer to DVDs for longevity. I don't need a tuner on the machine since recently our cable company went completely digital and we have to use a Digital Device on each TV in order to receive any programs at all, which eliminates any programing by the regular VCR.

I'm not sure I have the computer expertise to do the DVD burning off the computer which is the reason I figured using only one machine to load the tape and a blank DVD into to do the transfer. I've read about an electronic devise that connects to the computer and the VCR in order to do the transfer to DVD but even that seems too complicated. I had enough headache trying to get the cable Digital Device hooked up to the VCR and on to the TV then getting a picture without a couple of calls to the cable company.

Unless the tapes are home movies, found most of my VHS collection in the 99c bin at the supermarket. Blank DVDs aren't much less

I used to be in the electronics business...Funai has a long history of making good quality private label electronics for many retailers....I would not hesitate to buy something from them if it does what you need.
This is another alternative if you already own a VCR and have a laptop that can record DVD's.
Video 2 PC MKII - Digital Video Converter - ION Audio - Technology made simple: app accessories, portable audio, and more

I've used their turntable to convert all my LP's to CD's ...and remove the pops & ticks at the same time. Good folks.

funai makes one for Magnavox and walmart online was selling them. it is a digital unit with a tuner and hard drive and dvd. it was selling around 200. it is the best thing out there, and there is no comparison to the vhs. great unit.

I first bought a Sony Blu-Ray at Costco and took it back, the picture was terrible. I bought a Magnavox by Funi at Walmart because it would fit in the space I had in the entertainment center. It worked so well, I went back and bought one for the MH. That unit has been all over the country, on some pretty rough roads and still works flawlessly. This users opinion...it out preformed a Sony costing twice as much. Afer that experiece, I am no longer a brand name snob as I was before.

I'm not doubting your experience but the poor picture quality on the Sony was probably due to something being wrong with it, not because of a poor design or product. Digital playback devices essentially are all the same; this isn't like "hi-fi" anymore. If a device can play a Blu-ray disk it will produce the same digital output as any other device that can read the disk. Differences in brand and price relate to "extra bells and whistles" and, to some degree the overall quality, but the picture being better is not one of them. If you had a Blu-ray player connected by an HDMI cable to a TV and the picture was poor either the device was defective or the cable was.

It's too bad we can no longer depend on the old line of brand name products like we used to, such as Black & Decker.

Back in the 50s-70s my dad and I were always users/fans of the Winchester model 12 shotguns. In the 60's while he was working at Western Auto Sporting Goods Winchester came out with a model 1200, which had mostly stamped parts instead of the machined ones on the model 12s. Even the checkering on the stocks were pressed in. He asked a Winchester Rep why they would cheapen a shotgun they'd made for decades and the Rep said very few people would pay $350 for a model 12 anymore when they could get a model 1200 for $178 that basically did the same job but probably wouldn't hold up as long.

I appreciate all the encouraging information on the Funia products since that is what Wal Mart seems to be carrying. Even though these and other electronics can be purchased cheaper on the Internet, when it goes kapoot I want to be able to carry it back to a live person and say give me another one just like it.

If you are using the DVD/VHS machine mainly for dubbing, it might not be important, BUT, when I was looking to buy a DVD player for the RV I found many of the Walmart cheapos had limited hook up options. Check the inputs/outputs of your TV or other components you want to hook up and study the offerings carefully. I rejected about half the machines as having limited hook up options. Just something else to consider when buying video or audio components. There are so many options, component, HDMI, S Video, Optical, etc.
