Wally hard drive w/o external power

Does anyone use a non-Dish external hard drive without an external power source (like a Seagate Backup Plus) for DVR service on a Dish Wally receiver? I think Dish says to use one with external power but is that necessary?

If it has no external power source, the drive gets its power from the USB cable. Dish is cautioning against it, I'd imagine their Wally receiver might not have the power capacity to support the needs of the external drive. Proceed at your own risk. If you can find specifications for the receiver and your hard drive, at least you can take an educated risk.

I use solid state drives on both of my Wallies, both powered from the USB ports. Since they have no moving parts, the power draw is minimal and have had no problems in over a year.

When in doubt, a power USB hub can provide the power for the disk drive. less than 10$

Yes, I use a drive that was pulled from a dead laptop then put onto an external enclosure. No external power and no issues with my Wally receiver!

That's what I thought, but wanted confirmation. Thanks!

I tried to use a USB thumb drive with my Dish VIP211Z a couple of years ago. It worked for a few days, then got flakey. Don't remember the details, but I switched to a powered drive and all was good.

You could also try something like this if you aren’t using the second USB port:
Cable Matters Gold-Plated SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Y-Cable (20 Inches) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00L1K1OIA/

I agree. Why possibly burn out your Dish receiver when something like this will ensure the external hard drive is properly powered without taxing the receiver?

I use a USB powered Seagate GoFlex 2TB. No problem with Wally receiver.

They do still say that you need one with external power, but interestingly enough, their DishForMyRV site sells a self-powered 1TB Seagate drive, and it says right in the description that you can use it with a Wally or 211z receiver!

"With the DVR upgrade, you can record up to 100 hours of HD programming while connected to a Wally or 211z receiver with a satellite connection"

and:

"**Only for use with ViP 211z and Wally receivers"

https://www.dishformyrv.com/1-tb-dvr-upgrade-expansion/

What appears to be the same unit is available on Amazon for about half the price, although the dish one says something about being "AV optimized"
