Thanks to all who have answered my post on "setting up a satellite dish". To start the dish was DOA. But now, whenever I get within a few feet of the dish, my compass starts pointing far away from North. Does the dish really create that much electro-magnetic interference? Is there a different make of compass I should consider?

Stand behind the dish far enough so it doesn't affect the compass and pick a reference point in front of the dish. Then just aim the dish at the reference point.A compass that the dish won't affect won't point north.

The dish is fero-magnetic and will affect the compass.

My suggestion is to simplify things

Get a GPS, or grab your GPS.. Now, stand at the dish and note the lat & long readings. Note the LONGITUDE reading.. Now move away from the dish.. At least 10 or 20 paces. Now circle till you find the exact same LONGITUDE right down to the last decimal point. Now, between you and your dish is a TRUE north/south line So either you are DIRECTLY south of the dish, or it's DIRECTLY south of you.

From there you can use a common protractor to figure compass

NOTE: This is TRUE n/s, not magnetic
