What’s the best possible internet for a full time RVer?

Hi! New aspiring RVer here. I hope to live in a motor home full time soon. Only problem is I need excellent internet for my job. Like, the best I can possibly get. I was just wondering what everyone out there is using, and what the highest quality mobile WiFi you can get is? Can you hook a satellite up to your rv and have internet anywhere? Thanks in advance!!

I have Verizon with a Jet pack and unlimited data. Problem is they still throttle once you've surpassed the initial 10G which is bullsh*t. I don't use it for business so it serves my needs for now.

This may be coming to an end soon according to Technomadia:

We've received an insider tip that AT&T is about to rollout tracking of mobile hotspot data (potentially on May 31) and is gearing up top start enforcing mobile hotspot throttling by the end of June.

Note: This ONLY applies to smartphones and tablets on Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Enhanced Plus. Hotspot devices were exempt from this policy and should remain unlimited high speed, just subject to network management.

Hughes comes to mind.
You're talking about your father's HughesNET, not the new Gen 5 HughesNET.

Yes, it's a large dish. Yes, you have to manually point it. However, it's available in far more places than cellular and it's fast -- over 40 Mbps in this video:

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

We use the Mobley. I'm not up on this enough to advise you.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Gen 5 rocks. I am seeing downloads in the 30+MBPS and uploads in the 3-4MBPS range. Only downside so far is that they have not released their VOIP phone setup to the 'commercial' market which is how the portable systems are sold. Good reviews from the residential side and supposedly has dedicated bandwidth for voice.

I've tried Skype. The download quality is fine but the upload breaks up to often to be reliable.

Ktrip go to the www.rvmobileinternet.com website and sign up. A wealth of information that can help you. Answer really depends on where you plan to travel. Midwest to east AT&T and Verizon have you well covered. West into the southwest and rockies Verizon has the best coverage but there are still gaps. Get the Coverage! app from Technomadia to see all 4 carrier maps. That can give you a reasonable degree of accuracy on coverage.

You can still get poor speeds from any of the carriers. Congested towers (too many folks all watching videos at Quartzite) or simply poor back haul (Rock Springs WY) will get you moving on down the road or pulling out the Hughesnet system.

How long does it take you to set up that big dish?

while similar to a standard 1000.2 'DISH' satellite manual antenna(the type you see on houses or in yards) for TV takes some time and effort to 'zone in' to the satellite(s), as it is very critical that it have the correct up/down, side/to/side, face 'turn', and be level. It can be done, I've done it many times while traveling, but it is certainly a learning curve and takes experience.

the INTERNET satellite is even more critical for setup. Those with this type of antenna can help you more with their experiences, but I would say that it's more for when you are setup at a campground, park, or off-gridding for a good length of time. Mobile it's not, at least not in the 'automatic' satellite acquisition sense. But, it's doable if you are determined. It might be a good 'back up' plan to a cellular 'Unlimited' plan.

I also think that having TWO carrier Unlimited plans(Vz & ATT) is not a bad idea, as one should give you good coverage if the other is not available, etc. There are certainly national parks and a few places that you might not have cellular service, but if you are really 'working' with in day-in and day-out, it's doubtful you are going to go to those places for a long stay anyway.

Just some ideas. keep traveling!

TechWriter it takes about 30 minutes total to pull the dish and tripod out, set them up and then hit the satellite. An iPhone makes it pretty easy. Getting the tripod vertical with the level system in the iPhone. Lat/Lon from the Gaia GPS mapping app. Initial aiming with the SatFinder Pro app. And using the iPhone connected to the Hughesnet Router to check signal strength.

Getting a bit quicker each time but 30 mins is easily achievable. As MisterT says not something I would usually do for an overnight stop.

Just an FYI the current dish with the mount weighs in at about 35 lbs. There is a new model becoming available from Hughesnet which will be fiberglass, about 4" smaller and 6# lighter.

Not to hard to handle but does take up some space when stored.

unlimited WIFI

I posted on another thread about a product that serves another "world". I drive charter motor coaches, usually newer Prevost with 58 passengers all wanting to hook to WIFI. There is a product that I like and will probably put in my motor home when I get it.

This router comes with 3 sim cards enabling it to find the best or strongest provider in an area as you drive and can connect up to 100 users, does not throttle down and provides unlimited data. The router is more than a home use router and is about $799. The unlimited monthly service is $89.

Echostar 19 is the primary for most of the US. Echostar 17 fills in the gaps. As you go through ther setup app on the Hughesnet modem you enter the lat/long and the app tells you the sat, elevation and azumith.
