I'll soon be shopping for a new TV for my outside entertainment and came across this on Amazon
TCL LE26HDP21TA 26-Inch 720p 60 Hz LED HDTV
http://www.amazon.com/LE26HDP21TA-26...pr_product_top

It seems pretty cheap and I hadn't considered an LED but this has me wanting to learn more.

Any insights on pros and cons of LCD vs LED tv's.... especially as it might pertain to my outside application? It also comes with a 2 year warranty which is good considering it's going to be mounted in a storage bay.

Thanks,

Rick

RickO,

This is a fairly good comparison between LCD and LED technology.

LED tv's use LED backlights.. they are still LCD.

That site does a good job explaining..

Dont buy the TCL. Get a name brand.

Take it from someone that has built 3 HD TV control rooms, and currently building another. I'm using good ol' consumer Samsung LED/LCD monitors because they're just that good. Picture wise the Samsung's LED's kill anything currently on the market; and that includes Sony (that we decided to use their 60" monitors on one install instead.. bad decision).

We have Samsung LED's from 32" up to the new 60"'s scattered all over the station. They all exactly match, and they're colorimetry is amazingly accurate. Currently we have about 45 of them scattered around the country and not a single failure. The other thing about LED is that there is no warm-up when the monitor is cold. Something that's usually a problem with cold cathode or florescent LCD lighting.

I guess the only question left to answer is how they stand up to the ride in an RV.

Good question RJay. I want to make sure that I either get a two year wty or I'll purchase an extended wty. I think this is certainly going to be a case where it makes sense to buy the coverage against the harsh environment.

SCVjeff a question, The reports I've read say Samsung has poor quality up sampling images compared to others. In your opinion is this true? I'm looking at the UN32C6500 or 5000 models.

Dunno about that. Everything that feeds these monitors is uncompressed 1080i. Can't say as I've ever seen anything else.

We had two Samsung LED tv's installed in our coach last May. We have put 9,000 miles on the coach since installing the units. Both continue to provide outstanding color and sound received via signal from our in-motion satelite system. I don't know how long they will last, or if the road vibrations will have any effect on them, but we are very happy with the products to date.

I've bought 5 LCD tv's in the past year. Returned the ones that weren't Samsung and bought Samsung's. The Samsung is more expensive but well worth it.
I had one that was LED but wasn't all that impressed with it.
The price on the one you listed is way too high. Keep looking for a Samsung.

I have a CFL Sony in the rig and 2 LED Samsungs in the house and they both work just fine.

The LED Samsungs are about 1" thick however, as LED technology permits thinner displays.

rick,

check out this TV from COSTCO.
Costco - VIZIO 23" XVT Series LED Edgelit LCD HDTV 1.7" Deep=

it is a good rated TV, comes with a 2 year warranty from COSTCO, and if you are not a member, you can pay a fee to buy it anyway. also if you charge with AE, you get an extra year warranty. i just ordered the 26 inch in the same model and it was on sale for the same price to replace the TV in the bedroom on the Journey, but it sold out last night.
