wifi

Is there anyway to have wifi to A laptop when traveling?
Reason I need it to a laptop is because my grandson is home schooled via the internet. If possible we can take him with us on some of our trips and he can be in class as we travel.
thanks

If you have a mobile hotspot then that hotspot can do the trick

Yes. Several ways of doing that. In fact I am using a laptop right now in my youngest daughters hospital room using the hospital wifi to respond to this.

#1. if laptop has a wifi capability, then many places like campgrounds, McDonalds, (or hospitals) and other places have free wifi you can connect to.

#2. If laptop has phone capability you can get wifi through your cell phone company.

#3. If you have data with your cell phone provider, you can get a "mifi" box from them an any computer you use can get connected. this is what we use at home with AT&T.

#4. If your cell phone plan allows it, you can set your cell phone up as a hotspot and use a computer through the phone connection.

Then there is always a satellite connection, but from what I hear it is expensive and slow. But what do I know?

Good luck and let us know what is working for you

My preference is to use my iPhone 0r iPad as a hotspot.the on my laptop view the available Wi-Fi connections, select iPhone or iPad and connect, voila, you’re online. This of course assumes you have a cellular signal.

DW does this as we drive, I do this in almost every park. Rarely do I find acceptable Wi-Fi in parks. Where I am now park Wi-Fi has a download speed of 2.65 mbps, iPad as a hotspot has 15.2 mbps. This is slow for iPad but certainly an improvement over park Wi-Fi.

Cellular hotspot is your best bet. He should have internet any where there is a cell signal.

The satellite dome is only for satellite TV, it can not be used for internet.

For in motion internet, a mifi cellular hotspot would be the best and most convenient. Using a cell phone as a hotspot would also work. Both of these will provide a WiFi signal the laptop can connect to. The connection will be maintained as long as the battery lasts and the cell signal does not drop.

If you are unfamiliar with data plans, make sure you understand how much data you have with a certain plan. If you can, get unlimited data. Otherwise you will have to monitor how much data the youngster is using. Some things like utube and others consume a lot of data. You might find yourself with a hefty bill if you are not careful. When we were down in the US last winter, we bought a hotspot for $60. The plan we got gave us 10 gb per month for $50. This was a pay as you go. When the card ran out, you could upload another if you want. We could not get unlimited without buying a two year plan. As we are from Canada, we didnt want a two year plan. 10 gb is not that much. Kids can gobble up data very quickly playing games and chatting, facetiming, etc. Get informed. We got the pay as you go from Verizon, as they have the best coverage if you are travelling a lot. Cheers

simple: if you have a relatively newer type of phone, iphone 5 or similar, you can easily turn on your own 'wifi hotspot' and share it to his laptop. Go into your 'settings', scroll down to 'personal hotspot', turn it 'on', set your desired secret 'password', and the laptop should then be able to connect to it.

or, better yet, your grandson ALREADY has his own phone and hotspot!

no worries.

Smart Phone Wi-Fi Hot spot. NOTE: as you move you may loose connectiity but most Cell firms (Save Sprint/No-Tel) are good along most freeways.

Wi-Fi "Hot Spot" like My-Fi

Mobily deice like Sync-Up and Go from T-mobile

Other options are very expensie but do exist.

RUMOR has it a new service will come out "Soon" (IF they can get over their disagreement with the FCC) which may be cheap and fast and portable/mobile.. But right now they are in violation of FCC rules so....
