I was wondering if anyone knew if they sell a device I can hook my iPhone into which will create my own little WiFi hotspot in the camper. I would like to use a laptop or iPad in the camper when WiFi is not available. Thanks!

We use Verizons MiFi card when traveling. It allows up to 5 users, and as long as you have cell access it works great.

You can add tethering to your iPhone which I believe also opens up the HotSpot function.

I tried the two week free sample period of Tether. I have a Blackberry and it worked just OK... I found it very slow and have been reluctant to go forward to pay for the full price. I am now leaning toward Verizon Mi-Fi, but I am unsure whether using it for GPS purposes will eat up all of my monthly allotment of MB...

I tether my iPhone to both my iPad and MacBook pro. No issues here. Just make sure you have a good data plan on your iPhone because when you tether with a laptop you are using full web capacity and that can chew up data quickly.

To turn on tethering on the iPhone follow these steps:

Tap Settings
Tap Personal Hotspot
Turn Personal Hotspot ON (if not off)
Note the password or create a new one.

To tether follow the instructions on the personal Hotspot page that you changed the settings on.

Good luck!

Mike

We are currently using the Verizon 5-Spot, newer version of the Mifi. It has worked very well we have Verizon service, even a couple of places where nobody else was getting any wifi. We have the 3 GB plan and so far have not gone over our allotment, we send emails and surf the web all we want to. We use it both at our home port and on TT trips.

Pda Net is a 20 dollar app that allows you to tether your cell phone to your phone with no additional cost.

Some providers have started blocking apps like Pda Net from running on their networks.

I have a hotspot on my new 4G Verizon Droid Charge but they want to charge me $20 a month to use it.

Verizon is starting to go away from their unlimited data plans. I've been considering going with Clear Wireless 4G. It's unlimited and can replace my home broadband and go with me on the road. A friend of mine has it and has been very happy with it. If you don't live in a 4G area, though, I would think twice about it, since you'd only be getting 3G speeds. That's pretty slow for a laptop when you are used to broadband.
