Now I'm having problems with my Windows E-mail. When I access my e-mail site a box comes up headed "Windows Security" then says "Please verify that both the username and password are correct for your mail server".
Is it asking for my name that the e-mail receptant would see or the name I use in front of the @ for my address? I have no idea what password I might have used years ago when setting up the e-mail. Is there anyway to access that point?
I'm using Windows Mail and I guess the server is pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com. What I know about all this e-mail stuff you could stick in your eye. I've never understood anything about servers and such.

You may have to contact your internet service provider and they can tell you how to reset your username and password if you don't know what they are. When you do that, be sure to write the info down because you will run into the same situation another time.

The user name is replaced by the word "USER" in the following phoney address. User@Internet.provider.con
The password only you know.
However when I see something like "Windows Security" I am very very very suspicious since the only thing asking for your password SHOULD be the email program on the server side (ISP side) and it won't say WINDOWS security.
That said, however, I do not use Outlook, I use web mail.. Way safer.

I am going to assume that you are referring to Windows Live Mail so the below (the ====) applies to Windows Live Mail.
If it is for a mail client that is on your computer, like Outlook, Thunderbird, or other email clients, then you are hooked up to a pop mail server. For SBC and Yahoo it is
mail.yahoo.com
Hotmail and others will be different but you can find it by searching for "hotmail login" without the quotes.
Once the web site is up it will ask for user id and password, typically your email address. Put you user id into the field and then look at the little print somewhere on the page that may say, "Forgot password." Click that link and follow the promts.
For Window's Live mail:
================
Windows Live account passwords
If you forget your Windows Live account password, you must reset the password before you can sign in to Windows Live again. You can reset the password by sending yourself a password reset e-mail message or by providing location information and answering your secret question.
To reset the password by requesting a password reset e-mail message, follow these steps: - On any sign-in page of a Windows Live Web site or of a Windows Live service, click Forgot your password?.
- In the Windows Live ID box, type your Windows Live ID.
- In the Characters box, type the characters that you see in the Picture box, and then click Continue.
- Click Send password reset instructions to me in e-mail.
- Click the e-mail address where you want the password reset e-mail to be sent, click Continue, and then click OK.
- Follow the instructions in the password reset e-mail message that you receive to reset your password.
To reset the password by providing location information and the answer to your secret question, follow these steps: - On any sign-in page of a Windows Live Web site or of a Windows Live service, click Forgot your password?.
- In the Windows Live ID box, type your Windows Live ID.
- In the Characters box, type the characters that you see in the Picture box, and then click Continue.
- Click Use my location information and secret answer to verify my identity.
- In the Question area, type the answer to the question in the Secret Answer box.
Note Select the following options if you are prompted:- Country or region
- State
- ZIP Code/Postal Code
- Click Continue, type the new password, confirm the new password, and then click Continue.
- If you are prompted for an alternative e-mail address, type the alternative e-mail address, and then click Continue. Or, click Skip to bypass this step.
- In the You've changed your password page, click Sign in to Windows Live.
The above is Microsoft's policy on forgotten passwords taken from their web site.

Wayne M is correct. From what I see pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com is wrong. It should be
(pop3) mail.yahoo.com or mail.sbcglobal.com.
Either your pop3 or smtp is incorrect so the server can't find your account.

Some more information if you are an SBC customer:
=====
Check your account information:
email address: wagonmasteer2atsbcglobal.net (example)
Incoming Mail Server: pop.att.yahoo.com
user Name: wagonmasteer2atsbcglobal.net
Password (Note: cant help you there, but an easy one to remember is bob spelled backwards, or radar spelled backwards.)
Outgoing mail server: smtp.att.yahoo.com
Port: 995
Use SSL
Authentication: Password
Yahoo help: Help Central | Help
Look at "MY HELP" on the help web page and click on the forgot password link. All service providers have something like that, whether it be Yahoo, Hotmail, GMail, etc.

Just discovered what you stated above. They didn't want the username I used when I opened the account, they wanted the complete e-mail address. After I used that instead of just my username along with my password everything seems to be working right. Who'd have thunk it.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I was about ready to trash this laptop.

Hey! I heard the big sigh of relief.
Glad you are back up and running. Now you can read the darn spam email, right?

You have no idea what a sigh I let out. And the spams aren't near as bad as all the 3-6 Forwards a day I keep getting from one of my cousins. But after not getting any e-mails for 5 days I even look for her Forwards each day now.
I spent over 30 minutes on the phone with an AT&T Internet Customer Service before realizing I was headed nowhere and hung up. She kept trying to blame either my computer or Internet Explorer (Outlook Express) but all that was proving nothing.
Thank goodness for the Forum. There's no replacement for people who have been there/done that.
