Hi folks,
We have a KVH in-motion dome on the roof that works pretty well overall. I also have a open face dish that I set up if the dome won't work because of trees or if we're sitting for a while and it may be rainy. My question is, how has your Winegard Carryout worked with regard to rain fade? I'd like to have a Carryout but there's no sense getting one if the rain fade issue is about the same as the roof dome. Thanks for any comments!

Carry Out will fade sooner then your Dome.
Both will fade sooner then a roof mounted Trav'ler.
Heavy rain the Trav'ler will fade.

The size of the dish make the difference.
How much time between losing signal to getting it back will depend on how fast the rain storm is moving.

I have a CarryOut. It fades just like any other satellite antenna. I have an open face at the stick house, i have had a dome on an RV, and now I use only the CarryOut.

My personal opinion is that they all fade and it will depend entirely on the severity of the rain clouds. In all three I have had rain that was coming down steady and never lost a signal. In other cases a thick cloud coming through would cause picture loss.

At least with the carry out I can move it 50 feet in any direction to clear obstructions.

I live in Oregon. We get 6 feet of rain each year. I have never had a problem with my satellite. Rain is part of life here.

We're in WA, about the same here. Only during very heavy rain do we lose a signal with either our stick house or MH KVH on the MH. Both are 18" open dish units BTW.

Mine are open dish's and I have never noticed any rain fade. Once we had fade when it snowed about two feet, but the installer had failed to tighten the coax connections too and after he fixed it, everything was fine.

Thanks folks, the antennas within the domes are so small they are very susceptible to rain and dew....my previous rig had a Motosat open dish on the roof and it worked just like my home dish, took really bad weather to effect the signal. Guess I'll save my money and stay with my portable open dish.

My RV dish is 18" and my home one is the bigger Direct TV dish with 3 lnb's. They both seem to be fine regardless of weather. I am going to a new 18" with an omni directional antenna on my new MH. They are installing it now. I will also carry my 18" portable tri pod dish just in case I get in a spot with too many trees.

HD channels will be lost before SD. Sometimes when you switch to a SD channel you can get the signal back until the sky clears.

You must have a miracle dish. I have never heard of anyone with a standard 18" dish that didn't suffer rain fade. I have spent time in the Portland area and had fade in every moderate-heavy rainfall.

What is an omni directional antenna? In the ham radio world we call vertical (omni directional) antennas as having equally poor performance in all directions. At the very best they have ZERO gain whereas a dish has recognizably high gain. I don 't believe there is any such thing as an omni directional dish.

Methinks you are bloviating a bit!

Have had our Carryout for 3 seasons now--I don't remember losing signal with it anymore than the roof Dish at the house. Very satisfied with it after going insane trying to aim a regular dish.

We only lose signal in the stick house under heavy rain. With our CarryOut we lose signal during light to moderate rain :(

In Indiana where our stick house is I spray the dish face with WD40 to keep the snow from sticking to it and degrading the signal. I'm thinking of applying RainEx to the CarryOut to help with the rain/signal problem.

All of the Carry out and like have a smaller antenna and wil rain fade slightly sooner than a full size dish.
