Researching pros or cons of subject satellite portable antenna. Looking for a compact, portable unit to use as backup for our installed dome system. Thanks.

Hello Chief!
Hi Bill...I enjoy reading your post and learning new things as Satellite is 'new to me'. After Comcast as required us to install a set top box or attach a digital converter to every TV we own at an additional cost and problems with installs....we have been looking at Direct TV.
I have little experience with satellite service...that said, I do have a crank-up dish installed on my 2001 Excel 5th wheel. It has never been used as it is the only piece of equipment in/on the unit.
I noticed that Camping World will be having Satellite Days this month and will give away the MP1 Carryout if someone signs up for DirectTV through them during the event. Knowing the MP1 is new and different than the 'older' style dish mentioned....if one was looking at new service, would it be worth having the MP1 rather than getting an older dish later?
As we don't full time or able to spend a lot of time in the 5th...will upgrade the roof antenna dish at some point and have been thinking the Trav'ler would be the best dish rather than the dome.
...thanks for the information.

Workshop, the Carryout will work well with DirecTV as long as you don't want HD programming. No dome (as of yet) is capable of bringing in DirecTV's HD programming.

Just a note that the MP1 is not the carryout.

If you could get an MP1 at no charge (one of my very favorite things in life!) then I would jump on that deal. I like the design of the unit and the newer style antenna/LNB should give a very good signal with pretty easy setup. It's still a small footprint of a unit, just in a different way than the 9046.

Okay Bill Adams, you've got me confused (easy to do) -- you state the "MP1" is not a "Carryout"? This what its referred to in the catalog?

According to Winegard's website, there are 2 different Carryout models.

Chief,
The original was called the "Carryout." They are playing on the name and call the one being discussed the "Carryout MP1." I guess they are called "Carryout" because we can carry them out.
Bill's correct in that the Carryout MP1 is not the Carryout. Does that make sense!
Edited: Technically one is the Carryout® GM-1518 Automatic Portable, and the other is the, Carryout® MP1 GM-MP1 Manual Portable.

Sorry about the confusion. I really had not noticed that they call them both Carryouts. The Carryout I was referring to was the dome unit that has been around for awhile and is a fully automatic. The MP1 is a manually pointed antenna that is not under a dome as referenced by Linda. It does, however, have the same limitations that a dome unit would have since it is a single KU band LNB antenna.

One other limitation is that with the manual one, when you change channels, and the channel is on another satellite, you may have to go out and turn the antenna. I don't know this for sure, but with the Automatic one, you sure can hear it searching when you change channels that requries another satellite.
Anyhow, good luck.

That's correct. This is a manual antenna that points toward only one satellite. For DirecTV SD programming this is not an issue as there is only one satellite necessary. For many Dish Network customers this is not an issue either as the majority of programming is on 119 and if you are looking for a cheap and easy way to get satellite this might be enough as well.

The only reason I would use the manual antenna, as the MP1, is if we wanted to have satellite and couldn't receive it from the roof unit or over the air antenna didn't provide enough entertainment to keep one out of trouble. At the cost of the automatic Carryout, couldn't justify spending all my allowance all at one time.
At the cost of the Trav'ler at CW, might have to save up for it also....did find it at a lower cost by searching the web. Veiwing in HD isn't an issue as out trips are usually less than 5 days several times a year with a few shorter ones when we can. Most are toward the beach.
I mentioned the MP1 as a choice because as Bill mentioned....I like free....and if I sign up and need service anyway and since I might need a second antenna....free is good if they are giving it away.
If I went with a automatic dome unit on the roof, not worrying about HD and with DirectTV....which antenna would be recommended to run two receivers and a DVR.
Is there a place one could look to find which stations are on what satellite?
Thanks, for all the information.
Chris

It's hard to recommend that anyone buy a dome these days. With the multiple satellites and future HD requirements it just makes more sense to buy an open face multi-LNB antenna if you are going to buy anything. It costs about the same money as a dome and will give you much better performance.
If you still want a dome then the King Dome is the leader in the after-market arena but you should take a look at the Road Trip and Mini-Max antennas from Winegard. These are both very good antennas with very reasonable prices. Actually, the Mini-Max is simply a Carryout that is permanently mounted on the roof!
