Hi;
Forgive my laziness for not completely looking in here for post asking for suggestions. But, I've given up on the king dome and I'm gonna install the Winegard traveler. It seems there are several different ones to choose from. I really would like to spend no more than 1300. I care not whether I can get HD. If I can great, if I can't so be it. I have Direct TV. Will that model be completely automatic? As In I push a button and it cranks up and then rotates to find the signal? Am I missing out on anything great by not spending more?
Thanks as always.
Ed

Well all the travelers are fully automatic as in push a button and find a sat. If you don't care about HD so much, the 3 LNB directtv model will suffice, and can be had for under $1300. The slimline, 5 LNB model can be had for just a little over $1400 from what little bit of searching I have done.

If you are sure that you never want the DirecTV HD signal then you might want to take a look at buying either a MotoSAT Executive or one of the used MotoSAT antennas that folks are taking off to update to the newer model. You should be able to find a used MHDTV for around $500.
However, if you thing that you will ever update to HD then I would recommend buying the Winegard Trav'ler now so that it would give you that capability in the future instead of having to pay now and then pay again later. There is no upgrade line so it's pay now or pay later.
The DirecTV does cost about $200 more than the Dish Network version and the prices above do not include installation so if you are handy it is a very easy installation. If not you will need to plan another $150-$250 for installation.

Hey Rick just to make sure, can you give me your model number? I'll probably go ahead and spend a few hundred bucks more now than regret it later.
Thanks
Ed

I have the Winegard SK 3005. I've also noticed that it does an amazing job of finding and locking on a signal even when pointed directly into trees. Don't give up on it, it might take 20 min but I've had it find the sats while I was setting up my portable dish... assuming there was no way it could see through the wall of trees.
Just fyi, my extended warranty paid for most of my new dish too. My old Winegard ASC2003 failed. My dealer contacted the ext wty company and since there was no direct replacement available they authorized a similar unit for ~$1100 plus 4 hours of labor. Dealer just installed the new slimline and I paid the difference.
Now if DirecTv can only make an HD receiver that works well all the time I'll be really happy.

The Winegard Trav'ler for DirecTV is SK-3005.
For Dish Network it is SK-1000.
