Winegard Travler Satellite

Hi:

We are experiencing a problem with our Winegard Traveler satellite. We are currently in the states and the satellite had previously been working just fine (problem free for a long time actually). Our satellite service provider is Shaw Direct.

What happened the other day was that we had driven for the day and arrived at our new rv park, we deployed the satellite in the usual fashion, but the satellite display keep reading "locating satellite" it even peaked, but then went back to "locating satellite" until finally it stowed itself. We tried it a couple more times. No luck / same thing happened. so we had to watch tv using cable. Note; there was nothing blocking the satellite as we were in an open space.

I contacted our satellite service provider and they conformed everything from their end was in complete working order.

Two days later we travelled and again, deployed the satellite. We hoped with a new location that maybe this time it would work. However, no such luck. The satellite did exactly the same thing. This time we had the tv on and tuned to the "status" option - and we could see that the satellites were found based on the tv screen display. But then satellite continued to move and signal was loss as it trying to locate satellite. Again there was nothing blocking the satellite as we were in an open space.

Two days later we travelled and again, deployed the satellite. Third time was not the charm; the satellite did the same behaviour.

Next I tried the manual option in winegard and located satellite 111. The satellite behaved the same way, continuing to try to "locate satellite" until it stowed itself.

I redeployed that satellite, and by looking at the tv screen display of the satellite status, once satellite 111 was located, I unplugged the winegard box. This has resulted in that we have some satellite stations, but this is not the solution. Some is seriously wrong with the Winegard Traveler.

Any ideas?

thanks, peter

I believe in the last few days, they finished moving all the channels from Anik F1, to the new satellite G1, which you can't recieve south of the border.
Maybe your Winegard looks for a signal from F1 or G1 to lock on to. When you manually aimed the dish at Anik F2 (111), did the guide show up?

The above 2 posts are incorrect. You will now need the Winegard SK-73UP upgrade kit. It won’t be available for another 2 weeks. I have Shaw Direct and had the same problem. See the details below.

Shaw Direct has recently implemented the third and final phase of its transition plan from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 satellite encoding. This change will bring
many exciting new features to Shaw Direct customers, including expanded high definition (HD) programming options, enhanced programming guide
functionality, and additional receiver features.
While Winegard strives to build products with longevity in mind, this change will cause any Shaw TRAV’LER (model SK-7002 or SK-7003) system built prior
to November 1, 2017 to lose ability to properly identify and lock to Shaw Direct orbital satellites, rendering the antenna non-operable.
Winegard has developed upgrade kit SK-73UP that can be utilized to retrofit affected TRAV’LER systems. The SK-73UP kit includes the following:

 a new IDU (interface control box)
 ODU (under turret electronics assembly)
 Specialized tool to remove and reinstall ODU
 ODU mounting screws

There are multiple ways to determine the manufacture date of a Shaw TRAV’LER system:

 Locate the IDU serial number on the bottom of the IDU control box and contact Winegard technical services at 800-788-4417.
Note: If either the TRAV’LER turret or IDU has been replaced at any point, this number may not be accurate
 Locate the turret serial number by on the existing TRAV’LERs electronics module. This is accessible by removing the existing turret from the transition
plate and flipping the turret over. The serial number is located on a sticker on the electronics module with at black arrow pointing at it. See the second
page of this document for an example photo.
 Locate the serial number on the front of the TRAV’LER informational packet, if available

Winegard uses a standard numbering format with an embedded date code for all product serialization. Each serial contains the product model number
followed by a tilde (~) and 16-digit serial number.
The first six digits indicate the manufacture date in MMDDYY format (ie: 110117 would represent November 1, 2017).

They did not move all the channels from Anik F1R to G1, so that’s what is incorrect in your post. Anik F1R is still operational. You are correct however that Anik G1 cannot be seen south of the border, but that’s always been the case.

They completed the transition from MPEG 2 to MPEG 4. The satellite signals are all still there, BUT the Winegard Trav’ler dish cannot automatically lock in to the satellites. It will just keep searching. The upgrade to the Trav’ler dish will now enable the dish to lock it as it did before the switch to MPEG 4.

Well, see if you can find any channels on F1 after Aug 15th.

yes, when we are in the states, we have always lost some hd stations. and the remedy was to just watch those in station on their non-hd channel.

update....

just now, got an email from Winegard....

_______________

Peter,

Shaw has changed their signal encoding from MPEG2 to MPEG4, while this has not affected a home system it has affected Trav'ler models manufactured before November of 2017. We are working on an update kit for affected systems. That kit is not available yet, but we are hoping to have it available in the next week or two.

At this time what you have done to get signal is the only way to get signal until the update kit is released.

Thank you,

Well, I guess at least the one bright side of these latest moves SD has made is 'so far', they have left guide information on Anik F2R.

using the operation manual for the winegard traveler.... it details how to do a manual search for the various individual satellites. it was pretty simple :-)

here's a cut & paste...

Manual Mode:
The TRAV’LER antenna is an extremely versatile satellite antenna and can be manually set to find many different satellites individually. NOTE: This function is rarely used.
To enter the Manual Search Mode while the TRAV’LER is stowed:
Press the [Power] button and hold it for two seconds to turn the unit on. While the Trav’ler Interface reads:
Press and hold the [Enter] button for two seconds.
The TRAV’LER Interface will ask if you wish to enter the User Menu:
Press [Select] to choose YES and then press [Enter].
The User Menu consists of four choices:
Search Mode
Diagnostics Installation Exit
NOTE: Diagnostic and Installation Menus are not required for normal operation and should only be entered by a trained professional.

OPERATION
To use the Manual Search Mode to select a specific satellite, choose Search Mode by pressing the [Enter] button. Once in the Search Menu you may choose from:
MULTISAT MODE (The normal search mode) MANUAL 61
MANUAL 72
MANUAL 82
MANUAL 91
MANUAL 101
MANUAL 107
MANUAL 110
MANUAL 111
MANUAL 119
MANUAL 129
MANUAL 148
MAIN MENU (returns to the User Menu)
EXIT (Enters the Search Routine)

The SK-7002 will only see the 107° and 111° satellites in manual mode.
Press [Select] to cycle through each of these satellites until the asterisk is next to the satellite you wish to find. Then press [Enter].
The TRAV’LER Interface will ask you to confirm the change: Press [Select] to move the asterisk to YES.
The Trav’ler Interface will acknowledge your selection and ask:
The TRAV’LER will remain in manual mode until you select multi-sat mode again.
Manual ### *YES NO
POWER OFF *YES NO

Pressing [Enter] or choosing YES, will stow the TRAV’LER and turn it off.
Pressing [Select] then [Enter] or choosing NO will start a new search for your chosen satellite.
