Wineguard Pathway X2 Tripod Alternatives - pics?
I know that this topic has been discussed at length before. I, like a lot of others, have come to the opinion that the Pathway X2 tripod is poorly designed and am trying to figure out another option for supporting & leveling the antenna. If anybody a picture of what they did to solve this puzzle, I'd really appreciate seeing what their solution was.

- as a portable unit with automatic acquisition of the satellites, does it HAVE to be level? does it HAVE to sit on a tripod? why not just on the ground?
our KingTailgater2 portable is similar, and it either sits on the rear of the roof(maybe level, maybe not), and many times is either moved somewhere else on the roof, or down to sit on the ground, for best view of the satellites, yet being 'level' seems to have little effect on it... I've even 'intentionally' propped it up at an angle to best find all three satellites when 'up north' in Canada. I also find that a tripod is just more work for no special benefit, just something else to deal with and store.

I put down a big inverted pizza pan to keep it out of puddles and put it on the ground; been doing it that way since December 2013.
The problem with tripods, tables etc is that it can easily blow off which can't do it any good. I've had it blow over and roll around a few times without any damage.
There's no need to have it precisely level; close is close enough. If it's too far off it won't find all three satellites.

you might be right, as far as the 'manual' goes, but the rest of us are using our 'real world' experience that it doesn't really matter whether it's that close to level or not. Try it, you'll see.

Thanks
Good to know. All I have to go on so far is what the manual says since my RV is currently in storage.

Hi all,
A few things to note on the discussion here.
First, the manual does recommend being as close to level as possible, but as MisterT has noted, the unit can function if it is not perfectly level. Our search software assumes the unit is level or near level, so it may add time to the search routine the more out of level the unit is.
Second, in regards to the tripod, we appreciate the feedback and I have passed along to our product management. The tripod is a nice accessory to help protect the unit and keep it as close to level as possible, but we are always open to improvements we can make on our products.

I bought a tripod for my x2 recently and love it. I don't have to share a outside table anymore and I never liked it on the ground.

I've been using the Winegard tripod for a couple of years with my X2. My trick for keeping it stable is to hang a 10 pound kettlebell via a short bungy cord under the mount plate (using the slot designed for the screw anchor). It makes it very stable.
I adjust the leg lengths to get it as level as possible and have had zero problems so far.

So this week in Quartzite Arizona, I've had lots of problems with the satellite antenna and running 2 wally receivers. So for what it's worth I put the tripod with the pathway x2 on my living room slider, about 11 feet off the ground. I strapped a one gallon water jug to the bottom. Work's the same as when on the ground. But a little harder to steal.
