XLSX Files crash in excel 2010 works fine in excel 2007

We have tried the series of files on a number of PC's with different operating systems XP\WIn7. Files works fine in Excel 2007. It takes a long time to open in 2010 when trying to do most basic functions eg insert a row the system hangs \crashes. it appears to use a large amount of resources 1.5Gb RAM. The files are 400k to 1Mb in size. There are multiple sheets focusing on various sales targets with various formulae and conditional formatting. Haver tried disabling addons etc and am stumped.

Is the computer on a domain?
Change the default printer and check if the issue occurs.
1. Click on Start, and then Devices and Printers.
2. Right click on Microsoft XPS document writer and select Set as Default.
If Excel works as expected, visit the printer website or contact the printer manufacturer to update printer drivers
or
We tried to reproduce the problem at our end.
Even though Excel didnít crash, the file opened very slowly.
The issue seems to be specific to the file.
Refer the link mentioned below to repair a corrupted workbook about software XLSX Viewer Tool
