ZX 700 am/fm/cd/dvd player?

anybody have any knowledge how to get a new Zx 700 am,fm,cd,dvd player to play dvd's? I must admit i am totally clueless when it comes to electronics. i put the dvd in the player, and it looks like it is playing, yet nothing on the tv, i go to the different "inputs" on the tv, try them all, still nothing.
