4000 Onan gen

Not familiar with the 4000. Do you get a blinking light on the stop button after it shuts down?

If so, that is a fault code. It could lead you in the right direction. I can quote the Onan 7KW Quiet Gas codes for you if you give me the number of blinks. If it blinks three times, press the stop button again. It will then give you a 2-digit blink.

No. It should run at no load so long as it has good oil and good fuel.
