5500 onan generator quits

I have read of others having the same problem but no resolutions. why????

My generator quits. It seems to be getting worse, It used to restart but today it wont restart, and for now it is too hot to work on. I will pull the filter after it cools.

meanwhile I would like to know why I cannot find any text showing a parts breakdown for this unit. I have been told to check the oil level sensor but can,t find out where it is located, I want and need a maintenance and parts manual do you know where I can get one?

It is mounted in my 1999 Fleetwood pace arrow (onan marquis 5500 BGM)

Thanks....................Donny

Have you tried calling Cummins-Onan? They may be able to help you.

Donny. I googled 1999 Onan 5500 manual and got it. I can't seem to post it here but can email it to you if you pm your address to me or you can google it.On page #22 there is a troubleshooting section. Good luck.

Hi Donny,

Easy first: Top of the gen. crankcase oil.
http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/html/...dbook-2010.pdf

Page 17
Cranks But
Won’t Start
1. Fuel below generator pickup level in tank. 1. Add fuel.
2. Fuel supply shutoff valve closed. 2. Fully open fuel supply valve.
3. Carbon deposits on spark plug(s). 3. Remove spark plug(s) and replace.

4. Low oil level. 4. Add oil.

The next thing I would do is check if you are getting fuel to the carb:
If not the rubber fuel hose from gen into gas tank may be cracked and may suck air into carb.
Big job to drop gas tank and replace 13 year old fuel hose.

Let us know what happens AND

gen.

Hello all!
My generator is running as I type this. It cranked up immediately after cooling and I intend to let it run for at least four hours with both ac's running at max settings I have two hours to go.

Thanks for your responses the only one not tried (but will be) is to call Cummings - Onan. I checked, My filter was clean As I had done a complete tune up on the gen. not to long ago. I have the operator and install pamphlets, not much help!

The owners manual says do not over fill the oil and I thought I did real good with this but not really, it was a little over the fill mark, that is until it heated up then it was way over the fill mark. so I drained it down to the normal range. that's all and it is running smoothly now, I don't really believe this but we will see. I truly feel something is heating up and failing, only time will tell. I will return if something happens.

I just replied to a person with the same problem I had,...... no reply yet.

But the overfill was the problem with mine I have run the unit all day without so much as a burble. accurate filling is a must!
