AC
I have a Tiffin 2012 bus and when driving in in the hot south the cab AC doesn't keep it cool for the driver compartment. Is this a common problem and do you run the roof air?

Yes, this is a common problem in really hot temps. You are trying to cool a large area. You can run the generator and the roof AC. Some folks have put a curtain behind the cab area so the AC is cooling a smaller area.

Gary said it -- but for us, Yes and No -- with only two people we don't run the generator or AC when traveling. The front stays pretty fairly cool -- the back, not so much.

IMHO...
Worst thing for a gennie is to not use it or run it w/ light / no load.
Running gen is a good thing - don't be afraid to run a gen especially if you have a decent load (A/C or HWH) on it.
We frequently travel OK in AM w/o A/C but run the gen for a microwaved lunch & start the house A/C during lunch & leave it on for PM travel

In addition, it's nice to pull into a camp site for the night and the coach is already cooled down. It has been said by persons much wiser than I that you use less fuel running the generator and roof ACs than you will with the dash air. I usually run the roof ACs and put the dash air on fan only to keep the air moving.

In temps in the low 120's in Arizona, we'd have both our 15k roof AC's on, and the OTR AC on - we were OK. But it took all three. (In fairness, I did not close off the back 2/3 of the coach with the door between the galley and bath/bedroom areas. Very possible that the front 15K roof and OTR AC units would have also kept us OK while traveling. But as mentioned, we wanted the rear living area cool when we pulled off the road too.)
I think we have to remember that different coaches have different characteristics that can effect what is required to keep them cool. Color of paint, angle and expanse of windshield area, dual pane vs non dual pane, coach insulation value, 13.5K vs 15K roof AC units - and probably others too.... So what works well for one of us, may not work well for someone else.
Just keep on experimenting and see what works for you!!!! Oh, and I too like to exercise our generator regularly, and prefer to spend that fuel serving a purpose - cooling the rig while in use !
Best to all,
Smitty

We dropped our Dutch Star at a dealer on May 1 to get a bunch of things fixed before we go full time. The dash a/c died on the drive there, and when the mechanic started it to run tests, the a/c compressor froze and broke the serpentine belt that runs a lot of things on the engine. Unbelievably lucky that didn't happen on the drive.
The service advisor told us that we should run the generator and the roof a/c's while driving instead of the dash air. He said the dash air will use 4 gallons of diesel per hour of driving, while the generator will only use 1 gallon per hour. This seems to be basically what you were told as well. Does anyone have any experience doing this on a regular basis?

As an engineer I have a hard time believing four gallons per hour.
If a person were to drive for 10 hours in a day (which we have done a few times when we must make miles), that would say the AC alone would have used 40 gallons of diesel. We carry a lot of fuel but there is no way that AC is using that much fuel.
My guess would be one half of a gallon per hour at max (probably less)-- That would make it more efficient than the generator and roof AC -- but obviously not making as many BTU as the roof AC, and not in the same location.
thx Dale

I use half gallon an hour for estimating generator usage.

I use 1/2 - 1 gallon per hr on my genny depending on the load. 4 gals/ hr to run the dash air? I would say the service advisor is exaggerating a bit.

I thought he might have been exaggerating. I'll have to try it when I pick up the rig and drive it 200 miles back home.
