What exactly is the fuction of the capacitor in the AC circuitry? Our front unit will not kick in the compressor, stays in FAN operation after COOL has been selected. Rear unit works fine. We do not attempt to run both at one time. (30amp service/5.5k Generator) I thought that I had read a post somewhere about this problem being traced to the capacitor.

TIA

Your scenario could be a bad capacitor but not always. The function of a capacitor in this case is to shift the phase in an induction load. If you were to look at a sine wave of a alternating current and put a capacitor on the same source, leaving the original in place, you would see a sine wave overlapping the original but out of phase. This is what helps a split phase motor start easier, requiring less hp to move the load.

Some posts have up to 5 lines in what I presume is the signature area. But I can only fit 3 lines in.

You will need t troubleshoot the entire system to find the problem. Does the T'stat send power to the unit on the compressor control circuit? Does the relay on the control board for the compressor close? Is the compressor terminals getting power?
Let us know what you find.

When my Dometic A/C did what yours is doing, I went up on the roof and pulled the cover, finding a lot of BLACK! Pretty easy to see the burnt wiring at the capacitor and I knew right away what I needed. You can get a new capacitor from a lot of places, but I found the best price at WWGrainger, believe it or not. About $14 as I remember. I bought three spares and sure enough, a second unit went out...now all I need to do is wait for that third one to go and they'll all be replaced with the new model capacitor.

BTW....Dometic admitted to using a poor quality capacitor in their models during the 2006 timeframe. Mine was built in 2006 and yours may have been also. So this is a known and well-documented problem

Bob (I assume that wasn't Carol, bad me, sorry Carol)-
do you have a part number for that capacitor so I can order spares?

Yeah, it's a Supco SPP5 model. Grainger's # is 4E239 These are available at various places on the web, so you might Google it. Usually Grainger is the HIGHEST price, but this time they were low. Go figure......
