pete & repete welcome to irv2
Sorry to hear we have to start out with a problem. If you can take out thermastat and ac pump still is operating you may have a x wire from thermas if you can trace it back to that relay your talking about and disconnect it from relay may prove if in wire for thermas. If still operating could be bum relay if thats what thermas is suppose to operate. Is the relay on a panel or inside of ac housing? We have some techs on site that will pick this up. "007"

This website is current down but if it comes back online check it for a troubleshooting guide in PDF format for the basement AC.

pete&repete, If you are comfortable with electrical wiring you may label and remove the low voltage t'stat wiring from the unit and try reseting the circuit breaker. Does the unit stay off? If so, then you have a shorted wire from t'stat or a bad t'stat. If not, the control board has relays that are probably the problem. Sounds like the points are welded together and if you can tap on the stuck relay (with unit off) it might just pop loose and be ok for awhile. Otherwise a new control board will probably be required.
