Roof unit in Gulf Stream 2002 has several symptoms.
1. It sometimes leaks water back into the unit by wet stain around the roof.
2. Other times it "dumps" water into the RV by drops when turned off.
3. The part that really amazes me is the unit sounds like the compressor starts and runs a little, makes a pretty loud humming sound, then turns itself off but all this is done while the thermostat is set to OFF. Or, I can turn the thermostat way high and leave it on to do the same thing. The only way I can stop all this from happening is to switch the breaker.
Any help on this stuff out here. I have pretty much figured out that I need to clean everything on the unit when i get home but what about this running in the off position stuff.

2 things you might want to check:
1. Is the thermostat sending an "ON" signal to the A/C unit when it is in the off position? You would check this at the back of the thermostat.
2. Is there is short circuit in the wiring between the thermostat and the A/C unit? You can check this by disconnecting the control wire at the back of the thermostat. If the problem still exists, disconnect that wire at the A/C unit. If that cures the problem, most likely a short in the wire.

It sounds like most of your problems are water related. The condensation is not being channeled away from the unit. Water could be getting into connections and causing your phantom start problem. A good cleaning of the unit should be high on your to do list.

I can check this out when i get home and thanks for responding. Weird thing is that the unit "cycles" in and out with the thermostat in off. You'll be sitting there and you'll hear the unit above you come on, no fan mind you, no air blowing, but something up there is humming and it get's louder over about a minute or two. Then all the sudden you hear a "click" and it's quiet again for maybe 10-15 minutes and then we go throught it all again. As this goes on, the periods of time the unit hums become shorter and shorter. Weird. All this just started out of nowhere a few days ago. The unit still cools just fine in AC position mind you. By chance does this info provide anymore light?

Yep, I think you're right about the cleaning. I doubt it's ever been done. Certainly a morning job in this hot weather. Thanks for responding.
