Advice needed for capping a propane line
I have removed my stove/oven and need to cap off the propane line. It has a flare nut on the end and a friend and I have tried to seal it without success.
I bought the correct size brass plug and the yellow gas line Teflon tape, but even trying 4 different thicknesses of the tape, never could get it to seal.
I need to leave this week to head north and will have to turn the propane tank back on.
HELP!

It seems you've done what you could do. Sounds like its time for an expert gas fitter. It's to risky to get it almost right. I personally would not cap it inside the coach but rather back outside where the line T's off the main line.

Hi Barb,
I'd head to Home Depot or Lowes to find the proper cap or shut off valve for the gas line. I assume it's copper. You might have to cut the flare off the end to get a proper cap for it. Just make sure you get one for gas. Good luck with it.

If you have a flare fitting, you need a male of female flare cap. DO NOT put any tape on the plug or cap. The Teflon tape or thread sealant is meant for use on tapered pipe threads.

The sealing surface on flare fittings is the flare, not the threads. Like others have said, you need a flare cap.

You have the wrong fitting. It should be sealing on the taper "NOT" the threads. If you're not sure go see a propane supply center. Don't risk anything with that especially don't rely on some "Shelf Stocker" at Home Depot or Lowes. See a professional that deals with propane...........They will have the correct fittings. I've seen so many people that don't understand and can't identify the different characteristics from one type of fitting to another. They may look similar BUT far from it.

Thanks guys! Be assured that I will test and retest before I trust any sealing job I do myself. The pipe is copper and has a 3/8 flare nut on it. It appears the T in the propane line is inaccessible, unless I want to dismantle the cabinet. I am trying to put a plug in the flare nut.
One last question -- is there a Shark Bite type fitting that will safely work on copper pipe that carries propane?

No! Sharkbite is for water not for gas.
Using the proper flare fitting should work or you may need to cut off the end and re-flare it for a proper seal.

When you are installing the plug on the flare nut, are you using a wrench on each side of the connection?
Had to ask.

Yes.
Do I use yellow Teflon tape with the flare nut plug or not?

Nothing...............It seals on the taper/flare "not" the threads. Thread tape or sealant is for pipe threads only.
