You could have a bad thermostat or you could have a stuck relay or contactor. More informations as to what year, make and model of air conditioner you have will help us in helping you troubleshoot which component is the problem. If you have a digital thermostat and quick type connector, try unplugging it and turning the circuit breaker back on. If is still runs then it is not the thermostat. If it does not then the chances are it is the thermostat. Some brands do not turn off immediately; there is a time delay. Let us know what you have and we will try to help.
