Air conditioner old, rusted, and sprung a leak?! Help determine if I need a new one.

So our ducted air conditioner on our 2001 Carriage Cameo isn't blowing cool. I read about cleaning it out, so I bought the foam and went to the roof to do it.

I get up there, and the fins look clean from the outside, but they fall off if you touch them slightly.

Can I replace the rusted pump part and call it good, or do I need to replace the whole unit?

We have 30 amps on the Trailer, so I'd need a inexpensive AC as a replacement, I'm open to suggestions if we have to go this route.

I think that is a suction accumlator that has the leak. You can replace it but If it was mine I'd eliminate it and just sweat in a piece of copper in it's place. I don't think the old girl has much life left in her. And if it ran very long with out the refrigerant in it, it's been sucking air because it's on the suction side. Is it a R22 unit or 134a?

Only fesible repair if you do it yourself or a friend for free.

Been by the coast has it?(saltwater)

Yes, It lived at the coast in Long Beach, California for I believe it's entire life (prior to me buying it). Salt water has done it's damage.

You're saying I can remove the entire pump thing, or just that little mini pump (suction accumulator) on the side which is leaking. I am sorry, I don't know the proper terms, so I'm just winging it. Thank you.

As rusty and corroded as that poor thing is, I'd replace the unit.

You patch one problem and wonder when the next problem would occur.

"You can only put so much paint on a Pig". Just my opinion but I'd replace and not mess with it because you don't want to be having another problem with this thing in a couple of months or next year. That said your AC is about 12 years old - what is the life expectancy of a roof AC? Perhaps more than 12 years but you would be putting money into a older unit. New AC's can be purchased for somewhere between $7 & $800 so how much will parts cost you to repair the unit you have and will you get a couple years (or more) warranty? Personally, I tend to think roof AC's are a throw a way unit.

If you have a thermometer compare the temperature difference between the air going into the AC and the cold air coming out. Cold air coming out should be about 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the air going in - at least that's what I've read. If the air coming out is significantly cooler than the air going in you AC unit is not the problem.

x2

I do tend to hang on to things and try to keep them alive but I think it's time to replace.

You titled this thread: Air conditioner old, rusted, and sprung a leak?! Help determine if I need a new one.

And you have to ask if you need a new one.

Only if you want cool air,, That old one is toast,
