I thought that some people might find this of interest. We live in Eastern TN but have to travel up to Minneapolis for 2 months of work next week. Temperatures were supposed to be in the daytime above freezing and night time in the 20's. But, lately the highs have been in the single digits and lows below zero. I thought I might have a problem. I had already drained all the water out of my system and used compressed air to purge any remaining water. I thought I was safe for normal temps but not sure about way below zero.
A few days ago, I was reading the Aqua Hot blog on Yahoo run by the Aqua Hot Guru; Roger Berke. In one of the posts, he mentioned that "no matter how you drain your system, there is ALWAYS about 3/4 of a gallon of water that is hidden in the hot water system, the only way to do it right is to winterized with RV pink antifreeze solution". So, I decided to bite the bullet and not take a chance so I went down and bought 7 gallons of solution for the deed.
Yesterday I winterized the system. Roger was RIGHT. 1-2 gallons of clear water came out of the system, before I saw pink. Without doing this winterizing, I might have caused some serious damage. A bit of advice for those who do this, put a few gallons in a bucket and keep the bucket full by adding more antifreeze as the pump pulls it in. I went from gallon to gallon and lost my prime a couple of times and had to start over.
Happy Traveling, and stay warm.... Pat
