One of the things on my list to determine being a new owner, is if I should upgrade my backup camera.

The coach currently has a black and white camera installed with a 7" black and white monitor to the right, above the driver’s seat.

In other models (newer models) that I looked at the backup cameras were all color.

As a very novice operator, would anyone have feedback about the difference between black and white verses color ?

My gut feeling is that since the wiring is already in place, swapping out the camera and the monitor wouldn't be a terribly difficult project.

Is it worth the investment?

The current wiring should work with either color or B/W. There are two types of color cameras in general use with very similar results. Either of them should work with your wiring and any good flat screen monitor. I converted my system a couple of years ago and have a mix, the side cameras are CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) and the rearview is CCD (charge coupled device).

My experience has been the CMOS does much better in dark conditions but has less color definition in daylight conditions than the CCD. The rearview CCD has a brilliant image in daylight conditions but poor to none in the dark.

You can purchase these components as a system which is normally more expensive or buy them from vendors as individual pieces. When purchased as a system the installation is mostly plug-and-play and can be installed as a DIY project with minimal understanding of electronics. However if you choose to go with individual components installation can be daunting without some level of electronics knowledge.

Hopefully this will help in your decision making.
