Battery BCC Button disconnects, then immediatly re-connects

This one drove me nuts for a few weeks. But as usual, I learned a lot about the system while trying to figure out what was wrong..

When I pressed the CONNECT switch for the coach battery, I'd hear a loud THUNK as the solenoid energized. Then when I released the button, I'd hear a loud THUNK as the solenoid disconnected.. The Chassis connect / disconnect works fine..

The BCC I have (RV Custom Products CB-115) uses the permanent magnetic type solenoids. When the solenoid coil energizes, it either pulls or pushed the permanent magnet, depending on the polarity of the 12 volts applied to the coil. The magnet then holds its position, either open or closed.

Evidently, the switch had some dirty contacts and wasn't sending the full voltage to the coil. When I pressed the CONNECT, the magnetism induced in the coil was strong enough to pull the permanent magnet up, (the KLUNK), but wasn't strong enough to pull it far enough so it would latch in the CONNECT position. When I released the switch, the permanent magnet fell back to the DISCONNECT position (The other KLUNK)..

When I replaced the switch it worked fine..

I did a short article with photos on my web site:

BCC – Coach battery disconnects immediately after its connected – 1999 Southwind 35S

Good troubleshooting, and a good looking Southwind.

Rgvtexan; Tnks..

The Southwind is almost 20 years old but in very good condition.. Working on it is also kind of a hobby that keeps me off the streets at night..
