Batteries and generators, when ?

I understand this is a seriously newbie question, but..
When do you just run on your coach batteries , and not your generator or shore power?
Maybe the question is... what do you run just on coach batteries?

Hi Greatscot,

I think you will find many different answers largely based on ones equipment but also use pattern.

I'm in the desert/mountainous southwest and have solar power. I very rarely run my generator or am hooked to shore power. The exception is very hot summer use at low altitude when I wish to use my air conditioners. Said differently, everything in my rig is setup to run from the coach batteries.

A good battery monitor will probably give you the answer (I have a Trimetric, here). With one of these, you know exactly the state of your coach battery (and thus; if you need to run the generator to charge it).

House batteries power 12vdc lights, water pump, furnace fan, etc. If you have an inverter (converts 12vdc to 120vac), then 120vac lights and appliances can be run from the batteries. An inverter may power just the TV, specific outlets, or everything - varies. Generator or shore power will power everything, plus charge the house batteries.

If you have shore power connection, power management is not a concern. If no shore power then a combination of generator and battery usage is common. For example, run the generator a couple hours in the morning to power microwave for breakfast prep and charge batteries. Though the day typically run from batteries. In the evening again run the generator to power microwave for dinner prep and charge batteries again.

Just on the House batteries:

12v lights
absorption refer controls
water pump
furnace
water heater ignition
roof fans
sniffers

Batteries via Inverter

120v outlets
Ice Maker
Video equipment
Microwave/Convection Oven
Note: Most heaters like coffee pot, hair dryer, space heater, curling iron etc drain the batteries very quickly.
