Battery Box?
I just bought two US2200 XC, 6V, 232Ah, golf cart batteries. That I want to install in one of the "basement" storage bays of my new 5er.
The dimensions of these batteries are 10-1/4"L x 7-1/8"W x 11-1/2"H. So far, I am unable to locate a battery box that will fit them. Is a vented box really required in what is essentially an outside compartment? If so, where do you find them?
Joel

This Google link has all kinds of RV battery box's. The height seems to be a problem, one link has someone who made his own vented box.

Thanks 007
I did finally find a box that is made for these tall batteries. For anybody else looking for them, it is the NOCO Group 6V box. See http://www.amazon.com/NOCO-Group-Sna...d=T168APDSGUXT
I'm still not really convinced that I need to vent the batteries in an outside compartment, but I guess that it can't hurt.

The reason you need to vent batteries is because they off-gas during charging. The gas they emit is hydrogen.......remember the Hindenberg. The compartment you install the batteries into should be vented to atmosphere.

Vented is a relative condition. The basement storage bays on a 5er don't have big vent grills, but they certainly aren't very sealed either. I would guess that the hydrogen gas should have no trouble escaping. The significant word here is "guess." I would prefer to be a little more certain.

I've seen a formula for open area requirements......too old to remember where. In my coach there is about 250 sq. in. of vent area for the battery compartment. The compartment was designed for five 12 volt batteries.

Some of the battery box tops have a fitting for a tube that attaches to a vent that has to be installed on the wall so the off gas will vent outside

Battery compartments should have an upper AND a lower vent so the off gases can escape easily.

I just ordered a NOCO HM426 dual 6 volt box. I will need to modify it to create the vents for the top and bottom. The old box will donate the vents to be added. This was the best option I found for installing 2 6 volt batteries in an enclosed area.
