Best way to defrost freezer

We have a 2005 Beaver Santiam which has an ice maker. The element frosts over causing the ice maker to stop making ice. It needs to be defrosted about every two weeks or so. We normally prop open the door for several days until it has melted. I was wondering if using a hair dryer to speed up the process would be safe.

Are you turning off the refrigerator during this process? Just wondering because you said it takes several days. We turn ours off and open the doors and put towels in the bottom to absorb the water. When we are in a hurry my wife will use her hair dryer to defrost it. Just be sure you do not let the dryer touch the water, that could be a very eye opening situation.

My wife, who is in charge of the Norcold RV refrigerator and the Slim Line ice maker, always and only uses a hair dryer when defrosting, (however neither have ever needed defrosting more often than every couple of months).
If they did I'm pretty sure I'd have another maintenance job.

So far (nearly 2 years) frost has not been a big problem, but I did defrost it last weekend in preparation for a trip. I turned the fridge off and left the freezer doors open (fridge doors closed). Forgot about it for awhile, cleaned up the water, turned it back on. All is well.

Back in the "old days" before frost less refers we used a pot of boiling water set in the freezer to hurry things along.
Once done if you have a dry ice supply near by you can cool things down pretty quick with a pound of that set in the freezer all doors closed.

Try a hair dryer. If it frosts up like you say, you may have a leak in the door seal.
