In a continuing long-line of RV Upgrades and editorials, I thought that yesterday was an ideal day to mount our new Black&Decker 14.4v Dust Buster Model CHV1408 so that I could write up this article for you today.

It was rather reasonably priced and we got it at Lowes.

The old DB which was about 4 years old finally bit the big one and wouldn't hold a charge any longer. I still have a new filter for it which doesn't fit the new DB.

A little history on this device and its need is appropriate. As an option on the Winnebago order form it was paired with a re-chargeable flashlight which we ordered - why not. The first generation hand vacuum was a low voltage type that barely could inhale a piece of dust never mind doing yeoman work in the galley and stairwell in keeping the house clean. This unit was replaced within the first year of operation.

The second was a Dust Buster much more capable a Black&Decker 9.6v Model 9610. This vac proved it's worth time and again and served a long and useful life. Just recently it began failing to hold a charge.

The old DB was mounted inside the enclosure on the back wall and the door closed just fine. I dismounted the old unit and removed the rechargeable battery which will not be dumped into a land fill.

Now in trying to fit the new Dust Buster on the back wall, the door didn't even come close to closing. So to get around that little hurdle I mounted it on the side wall as shown in the picture.

The new Dust Buster has a unique mounting wedge for lack of a better description that when returned to the charger base the weight of the unit and the angle of the wedge force the electrical recharging contacts together. A much better design, the new unit simply does not snap-into a holder. Going down the road we have found the older unit ajar in the cabinet. It will be less than likely with the new model DB. Our original rechargeable flashlight was also taken out of service at this time because I never actually used it. I have much better portable lighting devices than the rechargeable unit such as a 3 cell LED mini-mag light which is totally awesome.

Side saddled and mounted the Dust Buster is on duty and ready to rock!

In this picture you can see additionally the outlet for our Red Devil Central Vac and an windproof umbrella which we bungee cord up to the entry assist handle.

More information about the Dust Buster

14.4volt - "No such thing as too much power!"

The Model CHV1408 can remain indefinitely in the charger without any degradation in performance and it should indeed remain in the charger when not in use.

In operation there is a long crevice snout of about 6 inches that comes out of the nozzle. It is permanently attached. There are 2 accessories that are clipped into the base. A modified slim crevice for the snout which is pressed in and another device with a brush which is more for picking up dirt and dust I would expect.

We'll go with this unit for a while and see how it works out. I expect that it'll do just fine.
