The black water valve on my 2000 Terry will not close all the way. It stays open about 1/8 of an inch causing all of the liquids to drain. The valve has a cable system. I need to know if anyone else has this problem and if anyone can help me correct it. I hope that there is someway to adjust the cable so that it will close the valve completly shut. Need help soon before starting our next trip.

I would suspect that adjusting the cable would not be the answer. Most likely the seal inside the valve has pulled out of place. Since you are able to open the valve, the job of replacing the seal isn't too bad. Drain and flush the tank well before removing the 4 bolts holding the valve together. I wouldn't try to reuse the seal as it is most likely deformed from being pinched in the valve. Had to do this with my cable operated black water dump valve a couple of months ago.

Should have mentioned that adjusting the cable is accomplished at the valve. Loosen off the set screw where the cable is attached to the valve and adjust.
Good luck!

My 99 Terry did the same thing. I took it back and had if fixed under warranty. They replaced the valve.

If you take it to someone to have it fixed, be nice and drain, flush, and let drip dry. The repairmen will thank you.

retalarver... Don't mean to make light of your plight, but think of it this way. If you were in WI where I am, you wouldn't have to worry about it leaking. It'd be one big icicle. LOL I hope you get it repaired easily and quickly before your next trip.

I had a similar problem in my fifth-wheel. The valve is on a cable and there is a cover over the underside of the fifth, so it would have been a hassle to replace the valve. What I did was go to an RV store and buy a few flanges and a new valve and I cut the sewer pipe where the hose connects and used ABS cement and glued the flange on at the terminus end. Now I have a valve right where the hose connects. If I ever have a leak again, it will be very easy to replace , as it is right out in the open. Also, after I had all the components for this job,it only took me about 20 minutes to replace this valve.

I had the same problem with a cable operated valve. Craw under the trailer and the valve could be worked ok with a pair of pliers. Even though the TT was under warranty, I no longer wanted the cable operated valve. FYI, I removed the valve and cleaned it more than once and the cable still would not close it. So, I went and ordered an electric operated valve and installed it. Best <$100 I spent on the tt. I would recomend it to anyone.

I have the same problem with my 2003 Grand Surveyor. It has the cable system and both valves won't close all the way. There are two trap doors underneath the axle area. One for the gray and one for the black valve. Looks as if this might be a continuing problem as the trap doors look homemade. Any way of getting rid of the cable system and going with the valves at the end of the pipe?

Forget replacing them with more cables. They seem to strech sooner than later.
Go electric. About $100 per valve.
