I live in a camper and plan to do much more boondocking after I retire. Question? I'm looking for the best way to monitor my single batteries voltage. I'm considering using a 2000 watt generator or possibly a solar panel. Or, combination of both. Also, have questions about installing a inverter/charger. I'd appreciate any wisdom/info with what has worked for others or any other suggestions. MD

Solar is not cheap, but with a proper solar system you will be able to go for days at a time before using a generator. To properly size a solar system you first need to determine your actual power use. Then size a system 50% larger than that. Don't forget the batteries. A single battery will not provide enough power for anything but the bare minimum per day. For instance, I have 250 watts of panels, and 4 golf cart batteries. I can go for several days of borderline weather without running the generator. Even with a solar system, you will want a generator too.

I live in a slide in truck camper. Limited battery and solar panel space. I don't need much power. Run water pump, a few lights, maybe an inverter to charge my phone, ipod, electric tooth brush....

You may want to look at this site for some info - HandyBob's Blog
There are some other discussions on here already about adding some solar so you may want to do the search thing too.

I have checked him out. I was just looking for someone who has set up something similar. I think I know what I plan to do with a smart meter, but I was really looking for info on inverter/chargers and if they are worth the money?

I to use a plug in inverter when I'm on the move. Considering another option when camped. I added two LED lights and have gotten used to them. Thanks for the info, though....MD
