Me too! It doesn't matter how much water you run down the toilet if the dump valve is open, it will still create a pile of crap that will harden and eventually block your tank from draining. Keep the valve closed until the tank is at least 3/4 full. Then when you open the dump valve there is enough water force to push any solids out the drain.
If you are experiencing tank freezing try flushing with windshield washer fluid instead of water until outside temperatures get warmer. It can get expensive, but much less so than a burst pipe or tank. Not to mention the task of correcting any freezing damage in that weather.
