Bumper mount batteries?

Hi there, we recently upgraded from 1 12v battery to 4 6v batteries. DH was going to mount them up front but now wants to mount them on the back bumper. I don't think the bumper is the best place nor is it strong enough. I have searched for info on this for a few days and have not found anything. Any thoughts?

Hi Jennifer,
Temperature changes are the worst thing for a battery. Mounting them outside the RV will increase their exposure to temperature changes. If this is done, there needs to be a platform for them to be mounted on and special case(s) to be mounted in. Make sure however they are mounted the structure can hold the entire weight of the batteries, platform and cases. Take into consideration the motion they will have when traveling down the road.

I agree with GaryKD. Most trailer rear bumpers are flimsy really, not designed to carry any weight, but rather a place to store a sewer hose. I have read many posts complaining about a bike rack or spare tire carrier causing the welds to break and bumper to sag or fall off. Carrying 4 6V batteries will add around 250# to the rear of the trailer, while removing around 100# from the tongue weight.

Thank you both for the info. I think I was able to talk him out of it.
