Cat 8kw Generator issue

I have a friend with a 2007 Newmar Allstar /c the Cat 8kw Generator. He does not use the generator often. It had been sitting for 6 months without use the last run. The generator starts normally, but when it has a heavy load, the engine changes "rythm" to a very rough sound, and bellows black/gray smoke. It will end up tripping the breaker on the generator.

He has been able to run a single AC on the generator and it appears to be normal.

I had him do a full service to the Generator, including fuel filter, air filter, and oil change.

Does this sound like a stator problem, or something similar? He is in the DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth Texas) area. Can anyone recommend a service provider for the generator?

Thanks!

I would bet a Onan or Generac genny. Look in the phone book (do they still make those) or google the brand and use dealer locator.

There is a Generator made and called Powertech/Cat. 8 KW Used in a few Motor Homes.
Your going to need the Model # and Serial # and the exact make to get answers on here.

I have a PowerTech/Cat 10kw in my 2007 Newmar mountain Aire 4528.

It has been a good generator. I use Cat oil and filters to service. Here is a link to generator manufacturer. You can buy parts there or engine parts from any Cat dealer.

PT-8KSiC | Power Technology Southeast Inc

Good Luck!

Sounds like it'd not handling the load too well, might have a Governor issue.

Is that an adjustable type setting, or an electronic replacement part?

That's a Power Tech Question. Give them a call or take it to a service center. There is one thing you could do to confirm the voltage and confirm voltage drops is to go to Lowes or Home Depot and purchase a> http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded...4400/202196386
Every Motor Home should have one. Just plug it in and start the Genny Initial voltage should 115 to 120 Volts- Turn on the front A/C- might hear a little grunt from he genny but no RPM change- note the Voltage- should be at 115- 120 - turn on the rear A/C and note the voltage- should still maintain 115-120 volts. with both A/C's running.
If the Engine begins to stumble I would look at the Air Cleaner and or the Fuel Pump as under load it wants more fuel and Air.
Cost: $15 bucs for a good meter and and hour of your time, before spending hundreds at a service center.

Black smoke indicates rich. So it seems you have a governor issue would be my guess. The governor can't keep up the rpm when a heavy load is required. Changing the fluids and filters certainly won't hurt, and running the generator for a while extended length of time may start working under all load conditions; but if all else fails, get in touch with PowerTech.

I have a PowerTech CAT generator, mine is 12kW, but the link provided will get you to some help or recommendation where you can get service for it.

Always suspect the fuel filters first, on diesel engines suffering from low power or rough running under load.

Yes, black smoke is rich running but it happens after fuel builds up from not firing the last stroke in the combustion chambers.

A diesel governor controls fuel to the injectors. Fuel to the injectors controls engine RPM. When the engine reaches set RPM, fuel is cut back. If the governor is faulty the RPM go up high or run low, the mixture does not change.

It's not like a gas engine, that has air and fuel control.
