Hi,
New to this lifestyle. My DW is a VERY light sleeper so any noise will wake her...and the compressor clunk when it cuts off after each cycle is really bothering her. (We have two roof mounted AC units. The guilty unit is our bedroom one...right above her head. The other unit also clunks, but it is far enough away to not bother her sleeping.
She is even using a small desk fan that she has on her night stand to provide a constant level of white noise in an attempt to muffle the clunking. It does a pretty good job of muffeling the clunk as the compressor cycles off, but it still apparently wakes her up as it cycles off and now she is insisting I get it fixed. I'm not so sure it is really broken Any suggestions? I would really hate to pay for a new unit, although I bet it would be a lot quieter than my 14 year old unit is. My unit does cool fine and I leave the unit fan running on High to help disguise the cycling, but that still doesn't do the job well enough. Does this thing have something like an engine motor mount that might be broken?
I have a 97 HR Endeavor. Thanks,

Ours do the same thing.
We also have a window A/C in our bedroom in the stick house that does the same thing.
Very annoying but I've learned to live with it. Kinda.

More than likely the problem is a weak suspension of the compressor motor inside the compressor housing and only a new compressor would correct the problem. Sometimes the outside suspension of the compressor can cause the clunking; so be sure to check it and the refrigerant lines coming off of it first.

Over torquing of the mounting blots or not evenly tightening them can twist the air conditioner base and cause excessive noise. I might suggest checking for correct installation and if the unit is still "clunking" have it evaluated for possible warranty repair.
