Coleman heat pump working correctly?

Our ‘05 gas Bounder has Coleman AC units which also function as heaters, heat pumps I think. The system seems to work well most of the time, but sometimes the air blowing out of the vents feels cold, and never warms up. Other times it will get quite warm.

Is this normal operation? They always work great for cooling.

The heat pump function of the unit is outside temp sensitive , the cooler it gets outside the poorer the performance and at a certain point they just don't work; usually below 45f.

Humidity is also a factor. Here in the desert southwest, our heat pump works down to about 40 degrees.

On further investigation, the compressor isn’t always coming on, and I can’t figure out how to make it. It feels like a malfunction, but it’s one I don’t have in AC mode.

May not be your issue but heat pumps go into a defrost cycle periodically and during that time, blow cold air. We have Coleman’s on a 2000 HR and I notice that happening when the outside temperature gets about 40 or below.
