Coleman Mark 3 A/C Problem

Hey All,

My 1986 Coleman Mark 3 TSR A/C just stopped working today. I can hear the compressor coming on but the fan doesn't blow and just buzzes/hums, so I turn off immediately. Do I need a new fan motor? Bearings? Thanks for your help!

Get up on top and remove the cover. See if you can freely turn the fan. If it is stiff, you need a new fan motor. If it spins easily, give the fan a hard spin, get your hands out of the way and have someone inside turn on the unit. If it runs now, you need a start capacitor.

The unit is 24 years old and not worth spending much money on it.

Only thing is that it uses old R34 which, I understand, works much better than the new stuff. What do you think???

The old roof top units use R22. Effective 2010, no new equipment is to be manufactured for use with R22. It will be available as a service refrigerant until 2020.

R-134A is used in automotive A/C units and replaced R-12.

There are a number of R4XX series that are being used for R22 replacements. I am not sure if the new production units have a 400 series or R-134A.

Wow, thanks Ken. Gonna go out this morning, remove the cover, etc. and see if the fan spins. If not, new unit here I come!

Well, the fan spins just fine on it's own, but still makes a humming noise and won't run when I turn it on. Will try to prop start it (clear!) as soon as the wife gets up. Sounds like I might need a new start capacitor? Where is that bugger located anyway? Underneath the motor? Thanks again for any/all help.

Update: Tried spinning the motor when turned on and it didn't speed up. In fact, as it slowed down it started to SMOKE. Well, either a new motor for an old unit or a NEW UNIT period. I vote for a NEW UNIT! Thanks for your advice and if anyone needs parts for an old Coleman Mark III TSR 13,500 unit . . . .
