Cutting the cord

I use a portable EMS for my RV and don't like to leave it hanging off the pedestal. Right now, the pedestal is low enough that the EMS unit is sitting on the ground.

I'm considering cutting the cord inside the electrical bay and adding a male plug to the RV end and a female end to the main cord. This way, when using the generator I will have a shorter cable plugged into the generator outlet. When I want to use shore power, I can plug the EMS into the long cable and the RV cable into the EMS, inside the electrical bay.

Has anyone else done this?
