Did I get taken to the cleaners?

Hello! In addition to the 1999 Minnie Winnie listed in my signature I also have a 1997 Brave with the Onan Marquis Gold 5000 generator.

Recently it would not run as soon as I let go of the start switch. It would run fine until that start switch was released so I figured it couldn't be the fuel pump, filter or carb. So I called up a mobile tech because this problem was WAY above my pay grade.

Anyway, he determined after checking wires with his meter that it needed a new Voltage Regulator. He said he needed to remove the generator, bring it home to his shop, "tear into it", and replace the regulator.

Now I have no idea where this thing is located and am trying to figure out if he really needed to do all this or if the voltage regulator is easily accessible and he was adding work to pad his wallet.

I don't mind paying for an honest days work but it "feels" like it he could have fixed it in place. I'm just not sure.

If you post the model number off the plate of generator, I could look it up. I just repaired a friends generator. Three techs and all I did was download the manual and checked two components. It was a simple fix but I had to drop the entire generator from under is rig. What a job.

This may be a silly question, but how much fuel does your gauge indicate is in the tank?

The model number of the generator is 5BGEFA26100M and the serial number is G963553056.

The gas tank is completely full.

Most Onan generators will not continue to run if they sense they are not producing power. Completely normal.

Bondad,
I have the service manual. I ended up replacing the ignition module on my friends unit. If you send me a PM I can send you a the manual. You will have to drop the generator from the RV. I am not sure where yours is mounted. Removing the generator is most of the work. Unless you have the clearance to remove the cover of the generator. The part can be brought on-line. But every problem id different. You just need a ohm/volt meter to make somequick checks.

- A BGE Spec M will not continue running if it's not producing any AC power.

- The voltage regulator is easily accessible behind the control panel up front and does not require dropping the genset from it's mounting.

- Most common cause of the unit stopping when you release the start button is failed or burnt brushes and/or very dirty/corroded slip rings. 2nd leading cause is failed voltage regulator. Either repair scenario is readily accessed in moments without removing the genset.

- Replacement of the ignition module would require dropping the genset from it's mounting location to access.
