I've had DishNet since '95 and have been taking a portable dish along in the rig since 2001. Based on testimonials here on these forums and from my own personal experience with DishNet, I'd say it's best to go with DirectTV.

With DirectTV, there is only one satellite to align to and they're more RV friendly with their business dealings. They even have ad in the February '07 issue of the Trailer Life magazine offering a free extra dish for the RV and also a free travel tripod in addition to the free 4 room home system.

I had a Winegard Movinview installed a year ago and have not had any problems. The reason I went with direct TV is as Hitchiker says there is only one satellite to align

Note that this ad is for Direct Sat TV, not DirectTV. It was explained to me that this is a licensee of DirectTV. The equipment will come from Direct Sat TV, but the subscription will still be with DirectTV. I have not found DirectTV to be that friendly to RVers (at least not the first-line representatives who answer the phones).

However, I agree Direct is better. There is only one satellite unless you want HD.

Also, if you have an RV only subscription (as opposed to a home subscription where you occasionally take one of your receivers on the road with you), you will probably be eligible for distant network service where you can receive east and west coast network programming. If you spend a lot of time a significant distance away from home (we are fulltimers) this is a benefit since local programming is spot beamed. Dish recently lost a court ruling and can no longer provide this service to any of its customers.

We've been with DirecTV since the early 90s and currently have 3 receivers, 2 at home and 1 in the RV. We pay the full rate for the home HDTV receiver, with the 2nd home and the RV receiver being treated as "mirrored" receivers for which we pay $4.99/month. We're satisfied with the service we've received from DirecTV.

We use Direct Tv at home and at the Dunes. It works great, easy to align. I just take one of the receivers from the house to use in the toy hauler. The installer gave me a dish for the trailer

I am a dealer for both DirecTV and DISH so I can tell you from experience that DirecTV is much more RV friendly for a few reasons:
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre"> </pre>
The "core" programming is on one satellite so it is easier to aim.
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre"> </pre>
More reliable equipment.
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre"> </pre>
Bettter compatibility with the aftermarket antennas. <pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre"> </pre>
RV waiver program so that you can get network channels anywhere in the country.
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre"> </pre>
Hope this helps

I just went to a seminar on Sattelite. Direct TV is launching three more Sats in the next two years. They say by 2009 there will be over 7500 channels. Some will not be available to RV use because of their location, but you will get them at home. You can also get local channels with direct tv, and dish lost this during a class action lawsuit in December 2006.
The aftermarket companines, and I know this for sure, KVH seems to favor DirectTV, and there technology.

I've had Dish and Direct. Direct is easy to aim. Find a little hole in the tree tops and BAM you have hit the sattelite.

I've been using DishNet for years. I'm very happy with it. I didn't have to sign any waver. If I want local channels in the area I'm in, I just call them and change my service address. When I get home I just change my service address back. I don't full time.
As far as whether Dish or Direct is best, I think I would pick the one that had the programming I liked. They both provide good service.
