Do you drain you water heater for storage

We use our coach once every 6 weeks on average.
Suburban suggests to drain the tank when in storage.

I am curious how many people actually do this.
I don't really mind draining it before storing, but I am concerned I might turn on the heater with an empty tank by accident.

If I monitor my anode, does it really make that much difference for draining?

Thanks,

Dan

Since we use our MH year round we only drain it at home if there is a freeze forecast.

I drain it as if the water in there sits too long it really stinks. Something about that aluminum in the tank itself give off a odor that gags me. I will fill it with a vinegar mix and cook it for 4-5 cycles and that will clean out the white stuff that causes that awful smell. When I pull the drain plug after this treatment the drained water looks like skim milk.

Not if you leave the drain plug on the dash!

Except for during winter time freezing temperatures, i never drain the tank. Probably gonna jinx myself here but the water heater is going on 14 years old...

Most do not drain unless winterizing. But, the first time you leave it in storage for a few weeks and you get the rotten egg sour smell off the hot water, me thinks you will change your program.
Really depends on where the water comes from. City water is normally OK because it is treated with Chlorine. Some campgrounds however have untreated well water with a sulphur content and if left stagnant in the hot water heater, will react with the zinc in the Anode rod and turn sour. NASTY!

Interesting idea....but here is what I would do

Drain plug on the dash.....since I am bringing the coach home from the storage place, I will put the plug in when I get home. Start fiddling with some things and start packing. Wife turns on the water pump. 10 minutes later she tells me the water pressure is very low....and the pump wont stop running.

Hmmnn...what would do that Oh shoot forgot the plug
At least we never turn on the heater at home.

Course I could turn off the heater with the heater switch located on the heater.
Need to think abut this...

Dan
