Domestic refrigerator ammonia smell

2005 Newmar Essex 4502
Opened my freezer and got a serious blast of ammonia.
Does this mean my 14 year old fridge is toast?

Toasted for sure, but there are a couple of companies that sell refurbed cooling packages... I have done it a couple of times. The Fridge has to come out and lay face down. Remove the old one and install the new one...

Have any ideas on replacement?
It’s so old I don’t want it to have problems with it down the road.

The cooling unit is definitely gone so your options are to replace the cooling unit or the entire fridge. I replaced the Norcold cooling unit in our Itasca with one from https://www.rvcoolingunit.com/ and it worked great. If you don't boondock, then a replacement with a residential type might be less expensive and will probably cool better.

There is a company in Kentucky https://rvrefrigeration.com/ that can work on and rebuild. They also offer lots of training video on line. Check You Tube. They train most of the techs at RV Dealerships. Here is a example of one of there training videos . Really some good info on there website. Good luck.

It should be an immediate given.

But I hope you Immediately Turned the unit OFF and disconected the unit from all power sources.
